FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team fell to Atlantic 10 preseason favorite, VCU, on Saturday afternoon inside EagleBank Arena. The Patriots suffered a 82-63 loss to drop to 1-6 in A-10 play and 7-13 overall.
The Rams remained unbeaten in conference play to improve to 6-0 in the A-10 and 11-8 overall.
Junior Nicole Cardaño-Hillary led the Patriots with 28 points, four rebounds and four assists. She finished 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. The Madrid, Spain native has now scored in double figures in 17-of-20 games and posted 20+ points in seven games this season.

Jacy Bolton added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Patriots finished with a 28.4 percent (19-67) mark from the field and made 7-of-25 3-pointers (.280). Mason held a +10 advantage on the glass (45-35) and was +16 in offensive boards (24-8).
The Rams shot 53.6 percent (30-56) from the floor and owned a +26 advantage in points in the paint (40-14). VCU also received 36 points from its bench, compared to Mason's mark of 11.
VCU jumped out to a 6-0 lead on 3-of-5 shooting as Mason called a timeout. The Patriots then forced three VCU turnovers over four minutes to trail by one (6-5). Cardaño-Hillary notched a three-pointer to end a scoring drought (12-8), but the Rams finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead by 10 (18-8).
Bolton and Cardaño-Hillary scored back-to-back three-pointers early in the second quarter (31-21). But, VCU hit six of its last seven field goal attempts to own a 12-point advantage at the break (42-30). Cardaño-Hillary kept Mason within reach after going 10-of-10 from the free throw line in the period.
At the half, Mason shot just 25.0 percent (8-32) from the floor compared to VCU's mark of 51.7 percent (15-29). The Rams outscored the Patriots 20-4 in points in the paint and 18-2 in bench points.
Mason went on a 6-0 run in the third quarter to cut its deficit to six with 4:18 remaining (50-44). But, that would be as close as the Patriots would come. VCU responded with a 14-2 run to maintain control of the ballgame, cruising to a 82-63 victory.
Up next, Mason travels to Philadelphia, Pa. for a Wednesday contest against La Salle. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside Tom Gola Arena.
