FAIRFAX, Va. - The No. 12 George Mason men's volleyball team (3-3, 0-0) fell to No. 11 Purdue Fort Wayne (4-2, 0-0) in four sets (18-25, 25-20, 19-25, 19-25) on Saturday night inside the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC).
"Hats off to Purdue Fort Wayne," head coach Jay Hosack said. "They played lights out blocking and defense tonight. We couldn't get a ball past them it seemed at times. When a good team makes you play harder than you already are, you make some bad adjustments and it showed tonight."
Sophomore Richie Hoff led the Patriots in kills for the third consecutive match with 11 on the night, to go along with 11 digs and an assist.
Redshirt freshman Zach Talamoa earned a career best and match high 15 digs, surpassing his season total on Saturday night. Talamoa notched the team's lone service ace as well.
In the first set, Mason was neck and neck with Purdue Fort Wayne, but never could grasp the lead in the set and lost 18-25. It ended off on an attack error win for the Mastodons.
The Patriots turned it around in the second set, overcoming a two-point deficit with an eight-point run, eventually leading to a 25-20 set victory. The set was defined by multiple attack errors by the Mastodons, capped off by a Jack Reese kill.
Mason couldn't carry the success over in the final two sets as Purdue Fort Wayne won the third set 25-19 by earning a 14-10 edge in kills over Mason. The Mastodons continued their momentum and captured the fourth set by the same score of 25-19, giving Mason their third loss of the season.
