Patriots Clash with VCU Saturday in EBA

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team returns home to host VCU on Saturday for Girl Scout Day.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside EagleBank Arena. Saturday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+, with commentary by Steve Kolbe. In addition, Shawn Ouellette will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m.
 
PATRIOT POINTS
* Mason looks to snap a five-game losing streak, with its most recent loss coming to Duquesne on Wednesday night (84-63).
 
* After missing the last two games due to injury, freshman Tamia Lawhorne made a commanding return to the hardwood at Duquesne. The six-foot forward recorded 21 points – one shy of her career-high – on 8-of-15 shooting (.533). She also notched a personal-best four three-pointers (4-8 3FG).
 
* Lawhorne is averaging 14.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in conference play. She's shooting 48.8 percent (21-43) from the floor and 53.3 percent (8-15) from three-point range.
 
* Mason competed against a Duquesne team which hit 10 3-pointers on 17 attempts (.588) and shot 56.1 percent overall (32-57) from the field. Both numbers were season-highs for the Dukes. Mason dropped to 2-8 when its opponents make 7-or-more three-pointers.
 
* The Patriots finished with a 39.1 percent (25-64) mark and only made five 3-pointers on 24 attempts (.208). Mason made only one of its last 14 attempts from three-point range.
 
* Freshman Jordan Wakefield scored a career-high eight points in 21 minutes of action. She was 4-of-6 from the stripe.
 
* With a team-high 22 points vs. Davidson, Cardaño-Hillary became just the sixth player in program history to surpass 1,500 points in their career. 
 
* Senior Jacy Bolton became the 20th player in program history to score 1,000 points in their career after scoring eight points at SMU (Dec. 31). 
 
* Cardaño-Hillary is second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring (17.1 ppg) and is first in steals per game (2.2).
 
* Gatling is fourth in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.525) and second on the team in points per game (9.8).
 
* Bolton is ninth in the A-10 with 6.5 rebounds per game, and is third on the team, averaging 9.0 points per game.
 
* Cardaño-Hillary began the season 14th all-time in Mason program history in scoring with 1,218 points. With a career-high 41 points at Penn State (Nov. 24), the junior guard cracked the top-10. She is 22 points shy of a fifth-place tie with Nickie Hilton (1990-94) with 1,565 points.
 
* The Patriots boast a 5-1 record when scoring 70+ points in a contest.  In wins, they are averaging 70.6 points while allowing just 60.3 points a game. Conversely, in losses, they are averaging just 57.7 points while surrendering 69.7 a game.
 
* In conference games this season, the Patriots are +9 in scoring in the second half (212-203).
 
SERIES HISTORY
One of Mason's most frequent opponents, the teams have met 63 times, with the Patriots holding a 32-31 edge. Mason has won four of the last six meetings, despite falling to the Rams 62-38 last season in Fairfax, Va.
 
SCOUTING VCU
VCU enters Saturday's contest with an unblemished A-10 record of 5-0. Last time out, the Rams outscored UMass 31-14 in the second and third quarters to pull away with a 61-46 win on Wednesday.
 
VCU was selected as the 2019-20 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball preseason favorite in the preseason coaches' poll. The Rams are coming off a record-setting season in which the team went 24-10 overall and 13-3 in the A-10, earning a share of the program's first A-10 Regular Season Championship. VCU reached the postseason for the ninth time in program history and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
 
VCU returns its entire starting five as well as its top nine scorers from a year ago, including last season's First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection Tera Reed and Third Team selections Taya Robinson and Danielle Hammond.

Mason begins a two-game road swing at La Salle on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Tom Gola Arena.
