LEXINGTON, Va. – A bevy of strong performances highlighted the weekend for the George Mason men's and women's track and field teams.
Junior
Jaylen Simmons set a meet record in the shot put to lead the Patriots at the Keydet Invitational, hosted by VMI. The reigning A-10 Men's Field Performer of the Week notched a personal-best toss of 18.14m for first place in the event. The mark ranks first in the A-10 and 25th in the NCAA this season.
Junior
Benjamin Viau and Simmons also posted career-best tosses in the weight throw, finishing second and fifth, respectively. Viau registered a mark of 18.40m while Simmons tabbed a mark of 18.16m.
The reigning A-10 Men's Rookie of the Week, freshman
Xavier Shirley, finished second in the long jump with a mark of 7.14m.
On the track,
Colin Cannon placed second in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:28.34, which ranks second in the league. He also added a third-place finish in the mile (4:20.10).
Grant Anderson earned second in the 3000-meter run (8:41.68), followed by
Jake Lonsdale in third (8:42.20).
On the women's side, senior
Ashley Lewis earned gold in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:52.71. Freshman Vilde Vage Henriksen was right behind Lewis for second-place finish (2:52.86). The pair's times rank first and second in the A-10.
Sophomore
Kelly-Ann Downer placed second in the 400m (56.43), followed by Lewis in third (56.72). The duo finished behind alum
Sarah Moore, who set a meet record in the event with a time of 54.50.
In the field events,
Kiana Stallworth earned first in the long jump with a mark of 5.83m, which ranks first in A-10. Sophomore
Jessica McRae tabbed a personal-best toss of 16.76 in the weight throw for a fourth-place finish.
Freshman
Bryanna Holguin tied for eighth in high jump with a mark of 1.50m.
The Patriots return home to host the Patriot Games this upcoming Friday and Saturday at the George Mason Field House.
