FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team plays its third straight road match, facing Campbell on Sunday afternoon at the Eakes Athletics Complex in Buies Creek, N.C. The opening kick is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Mason (1-2-0) fell to Appalachian State, 2-0, on Friday night at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex in Boone, N.C. The Mountaineers took the lead in the 71st minute and added another goal in the 72nd minute of play.

SCOUTING CAMPBELL

The Camels finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 9-9-3, including a mark of 4-3-1 against Big South Conference opponents. Campbell went 5-3-1 at home and 4-5-2 on the road last season.

After playing the first two matches on the road, Campbell is playing the middle game of a three-game homestand.Â

Campbell defeated American, 4-0, on Friday. Freshman forward Adrian Morales scored twice, while sophomore midfielder Matt Lock and senior midfielder Ian Rees also found the back of the net. The Camels outshot the Eagles 17-4 and held American without a shot on goal in the match.

The Camels dropped their season-opener at Memphis, 4-0, on Aug. 30 before responding with a 1-1 draw at Central Arkansas on Sept. 1. Â

Junior forward Thibault Jacquel led the Big South in assists (8) and was second on the team in both goals (4) and points (16) last season, while Lock tied for third on the club in goals (3), assists (5) and points (11).

In goal, junior Samuel Lechuga started 17 games and finished with a 9-6-2 record, 1.24 goals against average and seven shutouts during the 2018 campaign.

Campbell was projected to finish in a tie for second place with Radford in the Big South Conference as selected by the league's head coaches. Defending Big South regular season champion High Point was picked to finish first in the conference.

Campbell senior defender Gideon Betz, who earned 2018 Big South Championship MVP honors, was named the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.Â

The Patriots finished the 2018 campaign with a 9-8-0 overall record and posted a 5-3-0 mark against A-10 opponents, tying for third place in the conference during the regular season. Mason was 6-3-0 at home, 2-4-0 on the road and 1-1 in games played at a neutral site.

In the A-10 quarterfinals, the Patriots defeated Saint Louis in double-overtime, 1-0. In the semifinals at the Billiken Sports Center, Mason defeated Dayton, 1-0, in double-overtime to advance to the championship game for the first time since the 2013 season.
