Patriots Set For Tuesday Matchup At Longwood

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team plays its final non-conference match of the season, facing Longwood on Tuesday night with the opening kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Longwood Athletics Complex in Farmville, Va.
 
Last time out, Mason (2-6-1) won its Atlantic 10 opener for the second straight year with a 2-1 victory over George Washington on Saturday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field in Washington, D.C.
 
A pair of seniors led the way for Mason, with midfielder Ryan Mingachos finding the back of the net in the 24th minute and forward Tunde Akinlosotu scoring the game-winner in the 65th minute.  Sophomore defender Michael Diehl and senior midfielder Jackson Miles each picked up an assist in the game.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Brison Moorhead (1-1-1, 1-0-0 A-10) made six saves against the Colonials to record his first Mason win.  He has made 10 saves over the last two games.
 
Mingachos leads the team in goals (4) and points (9), while Akinlosotu leads the team in assists (3) and is second in goals (2) and points (7).  Both of Akinlosotu's goals this season have been game-winners. 
 
The Patriots have never lost to the Lancers, boasting a 7-0-1 record in the all-time series, with five of the victories by shutout.  Mason has outscored Longwood by a combined score of 15-3 in the eight games.
 
Last season, Mason and Longwood were scoreless for nearly 80 minutes at George Mason Stadium on Sept. 26, 2018 in a game that was delayed at the start for over an hour due to lightning. 
 
The Patriots broke the ice in the 79th and 80th minutes, when forward Colin Brezniak and Akinlosotu scored goals 30 seconds apart to propel Mason to a 2-0 win.
 
Mason and Longwood met for the first time on Oct. 25, 1979 with the Patriots claiming a 2-1 win.  In their last two trips to Farmville, the Patriots haven't allowed a goal, winning 1-0 on Sept. 22, 2015 and 2-0 on Sept. 23, 2017.

Midfielder Grant Robinson tallied his first career goal in a 2-0 victory in the Patriots' last visit to Longwood.
 
SCOUTING LONGWOOD
 
The Lancers have an overall record of 3-4-0, including a mark of 0-1-0 against Big South opponents.  Longwood is 2-2-0 at home and 1-2-0 on the road this season.
 
Last time out, Longwood dropped a 3-1 decision at Gardner-Webb on Saturday in Boiling Springs, N.C.  The two teams combined for 33 shots and 10 shots on goal.
 
In four home games, the Lancers have a 3-0 win over Howard (Aug. 30) and a 5-1 victory over VMI (Sept. 11).  The Lancers fell 2-1 to Navy (Sept. 18) and 1-0 to James Madison (Sept. 24).
 
Junior midfielder Ander Etxaniz and senior forward Mikel Abando are tied for the team lead in goals (4), combining to score eight of Longwood's 13 goals on the season.
 
Seven players have scored at least one goal and 10 players have posted at least one point for the Lancers through the first seven matches of the season.
 
In goal, junior Jacob Reimers has started six games with a 2-4-0 record and 1.19 goals against average.  He has made 26 saves and surrendered eight goals.
 
CORNER KICK
 
George Mason assistant coach Eduardo de Souza spent six seasons with the Longwood University men's soccer program, four as an assistant coach and two as the team's associate head coach.  He helped guide the Lancers to the Big South Conference championship in 2011.
 
GLIMPSE AT THE PATRIOTS
 
The Patriots return 20 letterwinners and five of their top-six scorers from last year's team that advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship game.
 
Seniors Tunde Akinlosotu and Grant Robinson tied for the team lead in goals (5) during the 2018 season, while Akinlosotu's 15 points led the club.  Senior Ryan Mingachos tied for second on the team in goals (4), assists (4) and points (12).
 
The Patriots finished the 2018 campaign with a 9-8-0 overall record and posted a 5-3-0 mark against A-10 opponents, tying for third place in the conference during the regular season.  Mason was 6-3-0 at home, 2-4-0 on the road and 1-1 in games played at a neutral site.
