WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mason senior forward
Tunde Akinlosotu and senior midfielder
Ryan Mingachos each scored a goal to lift the Patriots to a 2-1 victory over George Washington on Saturday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field. Â Â Â
In the Atlantic 10 Conference opener, Mason (2-6-1, 1-0-0 A-10) struck first against the Colonials (2-6-1, 0-1-0 A-10) in the 24th minute.
Mingachos scored his fourth goal of the season with a header to put the Patriots in front 1-0. Sophomore defender
Michael Diehl sent a cross to Mingachos to pick up his first career assist.
Mingachos, who had scored his first three goals of the season at home, has equaled his goal total from last season after the first eight games of the 2019 campaign. He has scored three goals over the last five matches.
The Patriots scored the first goal for the second straight game.
Akinlosotu increased the Mason advantage in the 65th minute, scoring the eventual game-winner when he netted his second goal of the season on a breakaway to make it a 2-0 game. Senior midfielder
Jackson Miles sent the pass ahead to set up the goal and notch his first career assist.
The Colonials responded two minutes later. Senior midfielder Max Holdsworth converted his third penalty kick of the season to cut the Mason lead to 2-1, but that's as close as George Washington would get in the Revolutionary Rivalry matchup.Â
Mason sophomore goalkeeper
Brison Moorhead (1-1-1, 1-0-0 A-10) made six saves in the match, three in the final 23 minutes, to earn his first Mason win. The Colonials equaled their season-high with 20 shots in the game, including seven shots on goal.
HOW THEY SCORED
24' | Mingachos headed in a cross from Diehl for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
65' | Akinlosotu scored his second game-winning goal of the season for the Patriots.
67' | Holdsworth scored into the lower right corner on a penalty kick for his third goal of the year.
QUOTABLE
"Good result and good battle today," Mason head coach
Greg Andrulis said. "Atlantic 10 Conference play is always tough and to get a win on the road against a well-coached team is important for the guys. A couple of quality goals by Ryan and Tunde and some key plays by Brison made the difference."
