FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team opens Atlantic 10 Conference play with a Revolutionary Rivalry matchup against George Washington on Saturday.  The opening kick is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the GW Soccer Field in Washington, D.C.
 
It's the second straight year that the Patriots have opened conference play against the Colonials.
 
Last time out, the Patriots (1-6-1) settled for a 1-1 draw against Bucknell on Saturday night at George Mason Stadium.  Sophomore goalkeeper Brison Moorhead made four saves in the match.
 
Mason senior midfielder Ryan Mingachos leads the team in goals (3) and points (7), while senior forward Tunde Akinlosotu paces the Patriots in assists (3) and is second on the club in points (5).
 
The Patriots defeated the Colonials, 3-0, in their league opener last season.  Tolu Ibikunle and Akinlosotu found the back of the net in the first half, while Grant Robinson scored a late goal in the second half to propel the Patriots to their first-ever win in an A-10 opener.
 
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
 
The Colonials have an overall record of 2-5-1 on the season.  George Washington is 1-2-0 at home and 1-3-1 on the road.
 
Last time out, George Washington (2-5-1) dropped a 1-0 decision to Villanova on Tuesday at the Higgins Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pa.  It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
 
Villanova netted the lone goal of the match in the 71st minute of play and limited George Washington to just two shots on goal in the game.
 
Colonials graduate student midfielder Sandro Weber leads the team in goals (3) and is second in points (6).  Senior midfielder Max Holdsworth leads the team in both assists (3) and points (7), while his two goals are second-most on the club.
 
In goal, freshman goalkeeper Justin Grady started the first six games of the season, posting a 2-3-1 record and 1.45 goals against average (24 SV/9 GA). 
 
Senior goalkeeper Noah Lubin returned from injury and has started the last two games for the Colonials with a 0-2-0 record and 0.94 goals against average (9 SV/2 GA).  He made seven saves in his collegiate debut in a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Rhode Island last Saturday.
 
CORNER KICK
 
Mason leads the all-time series against George Washington, 26-14-3.  The Patriots have faced the Colonials third-most of any opponent in program history, behind only William & Mary (46 games) and American (45 games).
 
The Colonials have won three of the last five matchups against the Patriots, including wins in each of the last two home matches against Mason, with 1-0 victories on Oct. 10, 2015 and Oct. 4, 2017.
 
In Mason's last visit to the GW Soccer Field, Colonials midfielder Oscar Hayes Brown scored the golden goal on a breakaway just 55 seconds into overtime to lift George Washington to a 1-0 win.
 
GLIMPSE AT THE PATRIOTS
 
The Patriots return 20 letterwinners and five of their top-six scorers from last year's team that advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship game.
 
Seniors Tunde Akinlosotu and Grant Robinson tied for the team lead in goals (5) during the 2018 season, while Akinlosotu's 15 points led the club.  Senior Ryan Mingachos tied for second on the team in goals (4), assists (4) and points (12).
 
The Patriots finished the 2018 campaign with a 9-8-0 overall record and posted a 5-3-0 mark against A-10 opponents, tying for third place in the conference during the regular season.  Mason was 6-3-0 at home, 2-4-0 on the road and 1-1 in games played at a neutral site.
 
In the A-10 quarterfinals, the Patriots defeated Saint Louis in double-overtime, 1-0.  In the semifinals at the Billiken Sports Center, Mason defeated Dayton, 1-0, in double-overtime to advance to the championship game for the first time since the 2013 season.
