FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team dropped its opening match of the Mason Invitational on Friday night to Wake Forest, 3-0. The Patriots move to 3-7 overall while the Deacons improve to 8-1.
"Today was a disappointing loss for our team," said head coach
Aylene Ilkson, "but we are resilient and going to work hard to bounce back for tomorrow. I think we had some shining points during the match but we have a lot to work on with our consistency heading into tomorrow."
The Patriots are back in action Saturday at 11 a.m. against Seton Hall and 7 p.m. against William & Mary at the RAC. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – 25-17, 25-21, 25-18
- Mason hit a season-low .074 in the match and posted a season-low 31 total kills.
- Siron Hardy led the Patriots with a team-high 11 kills at a .217 clip and added eight digs and two blocks.
- Mason held the advantage in kills (10) in the first set, but Wake Forest used five service aces and four blocks to take the frame, 25-17.
- Hardy contributed seven kills at a .667 clip in the second set. However, the Deacons had a set-high hitting percentage of .263 to claim the stanza, 25-21.
- Senior Katrina Santos made her season debut in the third set, posting two kills on five swings.
- Junior Alessia Del Romano added four kills, four digs and two assists in the match.
