Patriots Head To Drexel For Tuesday Matchup

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team is back on the road, facing Drexel on Tuesday with the opening kick scheduled for 6 p.m. at Vidas Athletic Complex in Philadelphia, Pa.
 
The Patriots (1-4-0) will look to snap a four-game slide after suffering a 3-1 setback against Liberty on Saturday night at George Mason Stadium.
 
Mason senior midfielder Ryan Mingachos scored the lone goal of the match for the Patriots, with senior midfielder Grant Robinson and senior forward Tunde Akinlosotu each picking up an assist.
 
Mason hosted Drexel in the home opener last season, with the Dragons scoring a pair of goals in the first 22 minutes of the match on the way to a 3-0 victory over the Patriots on Aug. 31, 2018 in Fairfax.
 
Dragons forward Chris Donovan scored his first collegiate goal in the 12th minute and midfielder Mathias Ebbesen increased the lead in the 22nd minute of play.  Midfielder Patrick Murphy netted the last goal of the game in the 65th minute in last year's matchup.
 
Mason outshot Drexel 19-8 in the match, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.   
 
SCOUTING DREXEL
 
The Dragons finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 9-5-3, including a mark of 2-5-1 against Colonial Athletic Association opponents.  Drexel went 5-3-1 at home and 4-2-2 on the road last season.
 
Drexel (1-3-1) recorded its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory at Bucknell on Saturday.  Freshman forward Philip Burckhardt and junior midfielder Adam Nork each scored their first collegiate goal, while junior goalkeeper Cameron Sanders made five saves for the Dragons.
 
The Dragons dropped their first three matches of the season, all by identical 2-1 scores.  Drexel fell 2-1 in overtime at Binghamton on Aug. 30, lost 2-1 to Rutgers on Sept. 2 and suffered a 2-1 setback against Northeastern on Sept. 7.
 
Sophomore forward Chris Donovan, who was selected to the 2019 CAA Preseason Team, leads the team in goals (3) and points (6).  Senior forward Kwesi Allen, along with Burckhardt and Nork have each netted one goal for the Dragons.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Kopsachilis (6-5-3/1.01 GAA/6 SO in 2018) and Donovan (3G/3A/9 PTS in 2018) were selected to the CAA All-Rookie Team following the 2018 season.

Mason and Drexel have met 14 times with each club recording six victories and two draws.  The Patriots and Dragons met for the first time on Sept. 19, 1998, with Mason posting a 2-0 victory in Fairfax.
 
GLIMPSE AT THE PATRIOTS
 
The Patriots return 20 letterwinners and five of their top-six scorers from last year's team that advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship game.
 
Seniors Tunde Akinlosotu and Grant Robinson tied for the team lead in goals (5) during the 2018 season, while Akinlosotu's 15 points led the club.  Senior Ryan Mingachos tied for second on the team in goals (4), assists (4) and points (12).
 
The Patriots finished the 2018 campaign with a 9-8-0 overall record and posted a 5-3-0 mark against A-10 opponents, tying for third place in the conference during the regular season.  Mason was 6-3-0 at home, 2-4-0 on the road and 1-1 in games played at a neutral site.
 
In the A-10 quarterfinals, the Patriots defeated Saint Louis in double-overtime, 1-0.  In the semifinals at the Billiken Sports Center, Mason defeated Dayton, 1-0, in double-overtime to advance to the championship game for the first time since the 2013 season.
