Patriots Travel To Face Navy on Monday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team plays its first road match of the season, facing Navy on Monday with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Md.
 
The Patriots opened the 2019 season with a 2-1 victory over American on Friday night at George Mason Stadium.
 
The Eagles scored the first goal of the game in the 11th minute of play, but Mason netted the final two goals of the match.  Senior midfielder Ryan Mingachos, who led all players with four shots, converted on the penalty kick in the 18th minute and senior forward Tunde Akinlosotu scored the game-winner in the 32nd minute.
 
Mason freshman goalkeeper Tillman Theurich made two saves to earn his first collegiate victory.  The Patriots outshot the Eagles 11-8, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Mason and Navy are meeting for the first time five years.  The Patriots are 8-3-3 all-time against the Midshipmen, including a mark of 2-2-3 on the road.  All six games between Mason and Navy that have been played in Annapolis have been decided by one goal or less.
 
SCOUTING NAVY
 
The Midshipmen finished the 2018 season with a 5-11-1 overall record, including a mark of 4-5-1 against Patriot League opponents.  American went 3-5-1 at home and 2-5-0 on the road last season.
 
Navy opened the 2019 season with a 3-1 victory over UNC Ashville on Friday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. 
 
Senior midfielder Ethan Singer, sophomore forward Jacob Williams and sophomore defender Matt Nocita each found the back of the net for the Midshipmen.  Williams has scored a goal in each of his last four games going back to last season, while Singer and Nocita each recorded their first collegiate goals.
 
Navy posted a 2-1-0 mark in exhibition play.  The Midshipmen fell to William & Mary, 1-0, in Virginia Beach, Va. before picking up a 3-0 win over Sienna at home and a 3-2 victory at Binghamton.
 
The Midshipmen went 1-11-1 in their first 13 matches in 2018, but won their final four games of the season and finished tied for fifth in the Patriot League standings.  Navy was projected to finish sixth in this year's Patriot League preseason poll.
 
Navy begins the season with a four-game homestand and plays six of its first eight games at home.
 
The Midshipmen return their top scorers from last season.  Williams led the team in goals (8) and points (16), while junior forward Nicko West was second on the club in goals (3) and points (7) during the 2018 campaign.
    
CORNER KICK
 
The Patriots and Midshipmen played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in Mason's last visit to Annapolis on Sept. 30, 2014.  Timi Mulgrew scored in the 75th minute to put the Patriots in front, but Navy's P.J. Suess netted the equalizer just two minutes later to force overtime. 
 
Mason is 2-2-3 all-time in seven road matches played against Navy in Annapolis, Md.
 
PARKING / SHUTTLE / TICKET INFORMATION

Fans are reminded that the general public does not have access to drive their vehicles on to the U.S. Naval Academy.  Fans may park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for $5 and take a shuttle that will run every 10 minutes starting one hour before the game and will continue running until one hour after the game is completed.  Fans 18 and over need a government-issued photo ID.  Enter Gate 5 off Taylor Avenue to park at the stadium.  Dogs are not permitted inside the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.  All soccer contests at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility will be free of charge.
