FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 2-1 victory over American on Friday night at George Mason Stadium.
The Eagles (0-1-0) broke the ice with the first goal of the game in the 11th minute of play. Sophomore midfielder Malachy McGovern scored into the lower left corner from six yards out to put American in front 1-0.
The Patriots (1-0-0) responded with the equalizer just seven minutes later.
After a handball was called against the Eagles in the box, Mason senior
Ryan Mingachos converted on the penalty kick, scoring into the lower right corner to tie the match, 1-1.

Tunde Akinlosotu continued the momentum for the Patriots, putting Mason in front to stay in the 32nd minute when he collected a rebound and scored into the left corner to make it a 2-1 game. Senior midfielder
Sukrija Dudic picked up the lone assist on the goal.

Tillman Theurich made both of his saves in the second half, while American junior goalkeeper Jake Agnew made three saves in the match.
