NORFOLK, Va. - The George Mason women's soccer team will officially kick off their 2019 season Sunday, as they travel to face Old Dominion (1-0-0), with the match scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex.
The Patriots started their regular season down in Greenville, N.C. on Thursday, only to play one half against East Carolina before inclement weather eventually canceled the match.
In the one half of play, junior forward Kayla Hamric (@kkaylahamric) earned a shot on goal, while freshman goalkeeper Jenna Hutchison (@JennaHutchison) faced eight shots in her collegiate debut, including two saves.
Mason finished the 2018 season with a 14-6-0 overall record (8-2-0 A-10) and reached the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Green and Gold were selected third in the Atlantic 10 preseason coaches' poll last week. Aside from the projected first place program, the Patriots were the only other program to receive a first place vote.
Old Dominion started off their 2019 season last week with a 4-1 victory over Towson. The Monarchs gave up an early goal to the Tigers in 14th minute, however the Monarch defense allowed only three shots after the early score.
The Monarchs went on to score four unanswered goals in a season opening victory.
Old Dominion earned their fourth consecutive Conference-USA Tournament appearance in 2018 after earning an overall record of 8-7-4, along with going 5-3-2 in conference play. The Monarchs ended the regular season on a seven-match unbeaten streak. The 16 goals allowed in the 2018 regular season set a new ODU program record for least amount of goals given up in a season.
The Monarchs were projected to finish sixth in the 2019 C-USA Preseason Poll. The squad is led by junior defender Emily Roberts, who was selected to the All C-USA Preseason Team.
The Patriots defeated the Monarchs by a score of 2-1 last season at George Mason Stadium.
