FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University athletic department, as part of the Basketball Excellence Plan, has completed a pair of state-of-the-art, renovated EagleBank Arena locker rooms for the men's and women's basketball teams.
Finished during the 2018-19 season, the renovation project has transformed the locker rooms for both teams into holistic spaces on par with the top programs in the nation.
Each 865-square foot locker room includes a comprehensive film room, as well as an enhanced lounge area and substantial locker space for each student-athlete.
The $1.6 million, privately-funded enhancement within EagleBank Arena also includes a brand-new media suite, which provides hospitality space, as well as a work room and press conference area for the outlets covering men's and women's basketball games all season long.
In addition, the space features a promoter's dressing room. That expanded area for concerts and family shows allows the men's and women's basketball programs to fully utilize their own spaces during those events as well as provide a first-class experience for the myriad of entertainers who perform at EagleBank Arena.
Ze Design (Miamsburg, Ohio) has provided concept renderings and visual elements for the locker rooms. A national leader in the design field, Ze has created stunning facility displays at the University of Notre Dame, Texas, Michigan, Kentucky and a host of other universities.
The architectural design of the project was awarded to Colley Architects, PC from Blacksburg, Virginia. Colley has developed a number of facilities projects for Virginia Tech Athletics.
The project was contracted by Chantilly's Alta Vista Construction, LLC.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT THE LOCKER ROOM TRANSFORMATION
Athletic Director Brad Edwards
"I'm thrilled that this complete makeover of our EagleBank Arena locker room space is complete. Facility enhancements are a key framework within our department's long-term strategic vision and for the promotion of our university on a national level. The locker room project is an outstanding example of this institution's ongoing commitment to gender equity and the sustained success of both basketball programs. We are extraordinarily thankful to our donors and partners for their generosity in making these projects a reality."
Men's Basketball Head Coach Dave Paulsen
"This locker room renovation project is a game changer for our program and provides a great space for our current student-athletes. It allows us to teach, to train, to review film and to prepare for competition while greatly enhancing our product on the court. It also benefits us immensely in recruiting. Having a facility which rivals any in our league, if not in the entire country, is a critical component to attract the next generation of Mason student-athletes."
Women's Basketball Head Coach Nyla Milleson
"We are very excited about the renovations within EagleBank Arena. The state-of-the-art locker room and player's lounge provides our student-athletes with a comfortable space to relax, study, and build team camaraderie on practice and game days. The film room gives us a learning environment in which to breakdown, analyze, and teach. We appreciate the support of the athletic department, the entire university, and the Fairfax community as the Basketball Excellence Plan continues to give us an edge in the Atlantic 10 Conference and on the national stage."
ABOUT THE BASKETBALL EXCELLENCE PLAN
The locker room transformation project is part of the George Mason University Athletics Basketball Excellence Plan. The nearly $4.7 million, privately-funded Phase I of the project includes the locker room renovation, as well as elements completed in 2017. Those elements include the programs' exclusive practice facility and a new, center-hung videoboard and lighting in EagleBank Arena.
The next step in the Basketball Excellence Plan, Phase II, will consist of complete design and construction of an addition to the Basketball Practice Facility. The scope of the project includes adding practice facility locker rooms, training and sports medicine performance areas and offices for the coaching staffs.
Over the first few years of the strategic vision, the department has generated more than $25 million in revenue contracts and commitments, highlighted by a naming rights deal for EagleBank Arena, a multi-year partnership with adidas and a long-term corporate sponsorships agreement with Learfield. In addition, the department has secured a multi-year sports performance partnership with Vivature and has benefited from more than $5.8 million in generous gifts from Patriot Club supporters.
