Patriots Lose Lead, Fall to James Madison

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped its final non-conference game of the season, falling to James Madison, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

Mason (19-29, 5-13 A-10) took the lead over James Madison (29-19, 9-9 CAA) in the bottom of the third against Dukes sophomore starter Justin Showalter.

Mason sophomore outfielder Cam Reckling led off the inning with a walk.  Junior catcher Logan Driscoll then reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error, with Reckling moving to third on the play.

After senior outfielder Brady Acker was hit by a pitch to load the bases, senior first baseman Tim Quinn drove in the first run of the day with a sacrifice fly to put the Patriots in front 1-0.

James Madison tied the game in the top of the fourth against Mason freshman starter Patrick Halligan.

Dukes junior designated hitter Fox Semones led off the inning with a single and freshman infielder Kyle Novak followed with a walk.  With two outs, sophomore Michael Morgan drove in a run with a single through the right side to make it a 1-1 game.
 
Halligan continued to shut down the Dukes, retiring nine of the next 10 batters he faced before finishing his day.
 
James Madison freshman reliever Lliam Grubbs took over on the mound for the Dukes in the sixth inning.  He was greeted by Mason sophomore designated hitter Scott Morgan, who hit a solo home run down the right field line to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
 
Reckling kept the inning going with a two-out walk and Driscoll singled to put runners on the corners.  Acker then knocked in a run with a single off of sophomore reliever Grayson Jones to increase the Mason advantage to 3-1.
 
The Dukes scored three runs on four hits in the top of the eighth off Mason reliever James Beasley to take the lead, 4-3.  James Madison junior first baseman Brady Harju had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double.
 
Halligan allowed just one run and scattered three hits with a season-best seven strikeouts and one walk in season-high 7.0 innings in a no-decision.  Beasley (1-2) surrendered three runs on four hits in 0.2 inning, while freshman Nick Zegna didn't allow a hit in 1.1 innings of work for the Patriots.
 
Showalter allowed one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 3.0 innings in a no-decision for the Dukes.  Jones (2-0) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to earn the win.  James Madison used eight pitchers in the game.
 
Morgan went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season, Acker was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI while Reckling scored a pair of runs for the Patriots.
 
The Patriots play their final road series of the season when they face Saint Louis beginning Friday.  The first pitch for game one of the series is scheduled for 7 p.m.
