FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University men's tennis junior
Edward Ayers has been named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team, the league office announced Monday.
In addition, Ayers earned A-10 All-Academic Team honors for the second-straight season, while graduate student
Giuliano Buzoianu made it for the first time in his career.
Ayers is now a two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection after garnering second team accolades in 2018. He is the first Mason player to make the All-A-10 First Team since Jimmy Lange in 2015.
"I think I can speak for everyone in the program when I say that Eddie deserves this," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "He works hard and gives 100 percent towards everything he does, regardless if anyone is watching or not. I'm proud to have Eddie representing George Mason and I know he will continue to improve and help us become better on and off the court, just like he's done for the past three years."
Ayers led the Patriots to their highest A-10 win total since 2014-15 and helped the Green & Gold match their best-ever seeding in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
In 2019, Ayers posted an impressive 10-6 dual record while leading Mason at the No. 1 singles position. He notched three Atlantic 10 victories, including victories over A-10 Player of the Year Jordan Benjamin and First Team All-A-10 selection Nathan Perrone. Benjamin had not lost an A-10 match in three seasons prior to his matchup with Ayers.
In addition, he combined with
Jakob Nielsen and Buzoianu to notch nine doubles victories on the year. With Nielsen, Ayers reached the Sweet 16 of doubles competition at the fall ITA Regional.
Ayers and his doubles partner Buzoianu are two of the six members on the All-Academic Team.
"A big congrats to Eddie and Giuliano on their all academic awards," Davis said. "These guys epitomize what it means to be a STUDENT-athlete, and they've been consistent on the court and in the classroom every year of their careers."
Buzoianu anchored the back half of the Mason starting lineup with aplomb throughout the year. He went 8-4 in dual singles, including an undefeated 4-0 mark in A-10 play. He also went 3-2 in A-10 doubles this season.
Buzoianu holds a 3.8 GPA and will graduate this week with a degree in accounting from Mason. Ayers holds a 3.81 in economics.
