ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The George Mason baseball team was swept in its three-game series against the Billkens, falling 16-2 in the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at Billiken Sports Center in St. Louis, Mo.
The Patriots (19-32, 5-16 A-10) fell behind Saint Louis (24-25, 12-9 A-10) in the first inning. The Billikens sent ten batters to the plate and scored five runs against Mason freshman starter
Jared Lyons to take a lead they wouldn't give up.
Saint Louis senior infielder Cole Dubet, who went 5-for-5 in the game, hit a three-run home run, while junior infielder Jake Garella had a two-run double in the inning. In the series, Dubet hit two home runs, three doubles, had 10 RBI and scored seven runs.
The Billikens added three runs on five hits in the third against Lyons and sophomore reliever
James Price to increase the lead to 8-0.
In the top of the fourth, Mason senior first baseman
Tim Quinn doubled and scored on a groundout by senior left fielder
Ryan Tassone to make it an 8-1 game.
The Billikens sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored six runs on five hits to pad the advantage to 15-1. Dubet hit his second home run of the game in the seventh to make the score 16-1.
In the top of the ninth, Tassone singled and scored the final run of the game when senior shortstop
Alejandro Aponte singled to left field.
The Patriots dropped their fifth straight game and finished the road portion of their schedule with a 3-19 record.
Lyons (0-4) allowed eight runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings and took the loss. Price gave up one run on five hits in 1.2 innings. Freshman
Nick Zegna surrendered six runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. Junior
James Beasley allowed one run on two hits in 1.2 innings. Freshman
Stuart Barrett tossed one scoreless inning.
Wark (3-4) allowed one run on two hits in 5.0 innings to earn the win. Four relievers combined to allow one run on four hits over the final four innings of the game for the Billikens.
Quinn went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Aponte and Tassone each drove in a run for the Patriots.
The Billikens scored 16 runs on 19 hits in the game and went 8-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
The Patriots will play their final series of the season, hosting VCU for three games beginning Thursday, May 16 with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
