FAIRFAX, Va. – In its final nonconference game of the season, the George Mason softball team fell to Georgetown, 9-6, on Wednesday evening. The Patriots move to 19-24 overall with two conference series remaining.
The Patriots will welcome St. Bonaventure to the George Mason Softball Complex on April 27-28 for a three-game series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is slated for noon.
With a majority of the pitching staff seeing the field today; ultimately, it was
Haellie Gordon who recorded the loss for the Patriots. The sophomore entered the circle in the sixth inning with the score tied 2-2. She gave up seven runs off six hits to move to 4-10 overall. A decisive five-run seventh inning for the Hoyas lifted them to victory.
Both teams exchanged a run in the first inning. After
Meghan Graham notched a double,
Adriana Erickson brought her in with a sacrifice fly.
Georgetown tacked on another run in the third inning but Mason responded with a run of its own in the fifth. After
Amber Verstynen singled and advanced to second on a throwing error,
Saige Cisler scored Verstynen with a double to left center.
Both teams once again put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Heading into the bottom of the frame down 4-2,
Anna DiMari notched her first extra-base hit of her career with a RBI double.
Georgetown then used a five-run top of the seventh to extend its lead to six, 9-3. The Patriots committed three of its four fielding errors in the frame.
With one final chance, Cisler drew a walk and
Alyssa Lawton took her place at first after a fielder's choice. With two outs, the Patriots' bats came alive with three straight hits.
Liz Seymour knocked a RBI triple,
Jess Curbeira hit a RBI double and
Taylor Dadig notched a RBI double down the left field line. Ultimately,
EJ Bankson struck out swinging to end the rally, and game.
