Mason lacrosse finished the regular season tied with Richmond for second with 7-2 A-10 records, behind UMass. VCU needed a win to get into the Atlantic 10 Championships and on Senior Day the Rams edged out the visiting Patriots, 13-12, and earned the fifth seed.
The match with the Rams was a back-and-forth battle throughout the first half as VCU took a 7-6 edge into the intermission. Both teams enjoyed a rally. VCU would score four straight, with two goals to end the half. Mason, down 12-9 with 13:12 remaining had a three-goal rally to knot the match at 12 apiece with two goals by
Abby Folker and one from
Erin Donoghue. The Rams Clare Murphy would score the game-winner with 1:33 remaining.
Senior
Chachi Kelehan scored four goals to lead the Patriots.
Abby Folker would had three goals. Freshman
Deanna Balsama was held to one goal but had a team-high three assists and six draw controls for Mason.
The Patriots finished the regular season tied with Richmond, but earned the second seed, winning the head-to-head tiebreaker against Richmond with their regular-season victory over the Spiders. Mason is led by freshman
Deanna Balsama, seven-time Rookie of the Week and third-highest goal scorer in the A-10 this year (48). Balsama is joined on the leaderboard by
Erin Donoghue (30 goals, 6 Assists) and
Chachi Kelehan (35 goals, 17 assists). Defensively, the Patriots are led by sophomore
Natalya Moody with 30 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers, and junior goal-keeper
Melissa Semkiw.
George Mason is hosting the 2019 Championship will begin on Thursday, April 25 with the first quarterfinal game between No. 4 Saint Joseph's and No. 5 VCU at 1:00 pm and the second game between No. 3 Richmond and No. 6 Duquesne at 4:00 pm.
