WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason softball team split its midweek doubleheader against George Washington on Wednesday. After falling in game one, 9-1, Mason responded with a thrilling 5-3 victory in game two. The Patriots improve to 17-22 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
Due to expected inclement weather on Friday, Mason's three-game series against La Salle has been moved to a single game on Thursday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader at noon Saturday. All games will be played at the George Mason Softball Complex.
In game one, George Washington recorded the first runs of the game in the third inning. A RBI single and throwing error allowed two runs to cross the plate for the Colonials.
Liz Seymour blasted a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning to cut George Washington's lead to one, 2-1. However, the Colonials responded with seven unanswered runs, including a five-run bottom of the fourth. The Patriots suffered a 9-1 loss in six innings.
Junior
Bekah Ansbro dropped to 8-8 on the season while Sierra Lange recorded her 20th win of the season.
In game two, Mason kept the line moving with three straight hits to start the game. A RBI single by Seymour drove in
Meghan Graham to give Mason the lead. The Patriots maintained their 1-0 advantage thanks to two huge strikeouts by starting pitcher
Haellie Gordon in the bottom of the frame.
After GW evened the score with a solo homerun in the third, Graham used a two-out double to bring in
Alyssa Lawton for the lead, 2-1. In the fifth inning, GW reclaimed the lead after a RBI single brought in two runs.
The Patriots used final inning heroics to split the doubleheader. Lawton started the rally with a RBI single in the sixth inning, tying the game 3-3. Later in the seventh inning, Mason took advantage of two errors to take the lead. After a throwing error by the shortstop, both
Jess Curbeira and
Adriana Erickson crossed home plate, giving Mason the 5-3 advantage.
Relief pitcher
Marina Vitalich struck out two of the final three batters in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.
Graham finished game two 3-for-4 at the plate while Lawton and Erickson each tabbed two hits.
