FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason University men's tennis graduate student
Giuliano Buzoianu has been named the A-10 Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
It marks the first time Buzoianu has won the award and second-straight week a Patriot has earned the honor. Junior
Edward Ayers earned the honor last week. Buzoianu shares the award this week with Jared Isaacs of Duquesne.
Buzoianu went 2-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles during an undefeated, 3-0 A-10 weekend for Mason. On Friday vs. La Salle in Philadelphia, Buzoianu helped Mason rally from a 3-2 deficit to take victory. He defeated Patrick Pascual in straight sets at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3) to tie the match up at 3-3. He also partnered with Eddie Ayers to win 6-0 at No. 3 doubles and help Mason earn another point vs. the Explorers.
On Saturday vs. Duquesne, Buzoianu put forth his clutch gene and won the clinching match for the Patriots with the score tied at 3-3. At No. 4 singles, he won his first set 6-1, then rallied from a close 6-7 setback in the second to take the third 7-5, and help Mason rebound from a 3-1 deficit.
Then on Sunday in the win vs. Saint Joe's, Buzoianu won his doubles match with Ayers, 6-4, at No. 3. He also was tied in his singles third set and had a good chance to win it when the match was called due to the Patriots clinching victory.
Buzoianu is a perfect 4-0 in A-10 singles action this season.
With Buzoianu's help, Mason has won six straight matches, including four-consecutive A-10 triumphs. After Sunday's victory, the Patriots have ensured a winning record in the league for the first time since 2013-14.
The Patriots return to action this Friday with a 1 p.m. contest at Richmond.
