GREENSBORO, N.C. – The George Mason baseball team was held to three hits, falling to UNC Greensboro, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
The Patriots (13-21, 1-8 A-10) fell behind UNC Greensboro (22-11, 5-4 SoCon) in the bottom of the first. The Spartans sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four hits against Mason freshman starter
Nick Zegna.
After a leadoff walk and a single, UNCG sophomore first baseman Josh Madole drove in the first run of the game with a single. With one out, freshman infielder Hogan Windish knocked in a pair of runs with a triple to increase the lead to 3-0.
With runners on first and third, senior outfielder Zach Kuchmaner singled in a run to extend the advantage to 4-0. The second walk of the inning loaded the bases before Mason freshman
Jared Lyons entered the game in relief. The Spartans tacked on another run, scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0.
UNCG added to the lead in the home half of the seventh against Mason junior reliever
Jared DiCesare. Spartans junior outfielder David Flores hit a two-run home run and Kuchmaner drove in a run with a triple.
UNCG starter Austin Koehn and relievers Jack Vogt and Alex Hoppe combined for a three-hitter. The Spartans recorded their first shutout of the season.
Mason was held to three singles in the game while UNC Greensboro had nine hits, with six for extra bases. The Patriots were held to eight hits over two games, all singles.
The Patriots dropped to 1-15 on the road. The Spartans improved to 19-4 at home on the season.
Zegna (2-3) allowed five runs on four hits and walked two in 0.1 inning and took the loss. Lyons allowed just one hit with four strikeouts and two walks over 3.2 scoreless innings. DiCesare surrendered three runs on four hits and struck out four in 4.0 innings of work.
Koehn (2-1) allowed two singles and struck out a season-high six batters in a season-high 7.0 innings to earn the win. Voigt struck out the side in the eighth and Hoppe pitched the ninth for the Spartans.
