Mason Spring Invitational Results (PDF)
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's track and field teams competed well on Saturday.
The Patriots defended their home turf at the Mason Spring Invitational, accumulating 20 top-5 finishes between the two teams.
Head coach
Andrew Gerard discussed the good amount of personal records attained throughout the day and how pleased he was with the performances.
"I think it went very well," Gerard said. "It was a high-priority meet for our throwers, vaulters and distance runners and I think that came to pass. It was a really productive meet for us, and it's great to do it at home."
In the women's 100-meter dash, junior
Taylor Williams finished first (11.95s), while freshman teammate
Hanna Wynter finished fifth (12.19s). Fellow junior
Brittany Preston also placed first in her respective event, the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.96), while sophomore
Davina Lane had a first-place finish of her own in the 100-meter hurdles (14.14s).
To round out the runners on the women's side, sophomore
Riley Freeland finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:37.65), while fellow sophomore
Allison Rice finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run (18:08.90).
In the field for the women, a Patriot pair rounded out the top two in the pole vault. Freshman
Hannah Robertson finished first, clearing 3.93 meters, while sophomore
Autumn White placed right behind her at second, clearing 3.82 meters.
Freshman
Jessica McRae also finished second in the hammer throw (50.09m) and fifth in the shot put (12.76m).
On the men's side, seniors
Rico Gomez and
Blaine Lacey blazed their way to a pair of third place finishes. Gomez powered his way to third in the 100-meter dash (10.62s), while Lacey earned the third-place spot in the 800-meter run (1:49.56).
Other standout runners included sophomore
Nick Corbin, who finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.37s), and a pair of underclassmen in freshman
Decker Barborek and sophomore
Cameron Faint finished in the top three in the 400-meter hurdles. Barborek placed first (53.86s) and Faint notched third (54.35s).
In the field, a trio of sophomores performed very well. Sophomore
Benjamin Viau excelled in the discus competition, placing first in the event (50.44m). Sophomore
Jaylen Simmons put on another show for the third consecutive week, earning second in the shot put (16.69m) and fifth in the discus throw (48.48m). And finally, sophomore
Harrison Shotwell earned second in the pole vault, clearing 4.82 meters.
"This type of performance sets the stage for the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in a couple weeks," Gerard said. "We look to be in a great spot moving forward."
The Patriots hit the road and travel south to Durham, N.C. to participate in the Duke Invitational next week. The meet begins Friday, April 19 and goes through Saturday.
