RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason baseball team allowed a season-high 21 hits and dropped the first game of a three-game series at Richmond, 15-2, on Friday afternoon at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va.
The Patriots (11-13, 0-4 A-10) fell behind Richmond (12-9-1, 1-0 A-10) when the Spiders batted around and scored five times in the first inning against Mason junior starter
Jared DiCesare.
Richmond sophomore outfielder Jordan Schulefand led off with a home run on the first pitch of the game to put the Spiders in front 1-0.
After a single, graduate student infielder Tyler Plantier hit a two-run homer to increase the Spiders lead to 3-0.
The Spiders put runners on first and second with a walk and a single before senior outfielder D.J. Lee reached on a fielding error, with Anthony Forte scoring from second on the play to make it a 4-0 game.
Richmond plated another on junior infielder Daniel Little's RBI-single to extend the advantage to 5-0.
The five runs are the most that Mason has allowed in the first inning this season.
DiCesare settled down and retired six of the next eight batters he faced until Richmond freshman infielder Brian Schaub led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to make the score 6-0.
Mason had just one runner in scoring position in seven innings against Richmond sophomore starter Tim Miller.
In the sixth, the Spiders sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs against Mason sophomore reliever
James Price for a 10-0 lead. Richmond junior outfielder Anthony Forte had the big hit in the inning with a three-run homer to the deepest part of the ballpark.
Forte drove in his fourth run of the game with a single in the seventh to make it 11-0.
The Patriots scored their only runs in the eighth off of Richmond freshman reliever Garrett Aylor. Senior first baseman

Bailey Klein knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
In the home half of the eighth, the Spiders scored four runs with two outs against Mason junior reliever Jon Ostroff.
Schaub hit his second home run of the day, a two-run blast to left, while Schulefand belted his second home run of the afternoon. The Spiders also scored a run on a balk for the 15-2 final score.
The Patriots have allowed 10 or more runs in four of their last five games. Mason dropped to 1-9 on the road, while Richmond won its Atlantic 10 opener.
DiCesare (1-4) allowed six runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 5.0 innings and took the loss. Price gave up five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work. Ostroff surrendered four runs on three hits in the eighth.
Miller (2-1) scattered four hits, all singles, with a season-high eight strikeouts to earn the win.

Ryan Tassone went 2-for-4 to lead the Patriots at the plate.
The top four in the batting order for the Spiders went a combined 13-for-21 with three home runs, nine RBI and 10 runs scored in the game.
The Patriots and Spiders play the middle game of the series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va.
