FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team swept its midweek doubleheader against Towson on Wednesday evening to mark its first doubleheader sweep of the season. The Patriots defeated Towson, 9-3 and 1-0, to improve to 11-15 overall. Mason will host its A-10 home opener against Fordham March 30-31, first pitch slated for noon Saturday.
In game one, pitcher
Kate Owsley made her second start of the season, providing 4.0 innings of work and giving up two runs and one hit.
Bekah Ansbro came in to pitch in the fifth inning, giving up only one run to earn her sixth win of the season.
Offensively, Mason was led by senior
Jess Curbeira who notched two hits and scored three runs. In addition,
Madison Aker and
Saige Cisler each drove in three runs. The three RBI mark set a career high for Cisler.
Adriana Erickson also recorded two RBIs in the game while freshman
Taylor Dadig added two hits.
To start the fifth inning, the game was tied 2-2. Mason then ignited offensively with a three-run fifth inning and four-run sixth inning to win game one, 9-3. In addition, the Patriots' defense recorded no errors to help seal the victory.
Game two featured a pitching battle between Mason's
Marina Vitalich and Towson's Sara Johnson. Vitalich came out on the winning side after a dominating performance, setting a season high in strikeouts with seven. Through five innings of work, she gave up no runs, three hits and zero walks.
Sophomore
Haellie Gordon entered the circle in the sixth inning with Mason leading 1-0 and a save on the line. She struck out one batter against zero walks to earn her first save of the season.
Mason's lone run came in the fifth inning. Freshman
Amber Verstynen singled in the inning and later advanced to third off a passed ball. With two outs on the board, sophomore
Meghan Graham hit the game-winning RBI single to score Verstynen.
Anna DiMari,
EJ Bankson,
Liz Seymour and Curbeira also recorded hits in the game.
