PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The George Mason baseball team dropped its third straight at Saint Joseph's, falling to the Hawks, 14-3, on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the series at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Patriots (10-12, 0-3 A-10) fell behind Saint Joseph's (10-10, 3-0 A-10) in the first inning when the Hawks plated a run against Mason senior starter Brain Marconi.
With two outs, Hawks junior catcher James McConnon singled and advanced to second when freshman infielder Nate Thomas was hit by a pitch. McConnon scored on a RBI-single by graduate student infielder Dominic Cuoci to put the Hawks in front 1-0.
Mason tied the game in the third against Saint Joseph's freshman starter Luke Zimmerman.
With one out, sophomore outfielder
Cam Reckling singled and junior catcher
Logan Driscoll walked. With two outs, senior first baseman
Tim Quinn walked to load the bases. Reckling would race home on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it a 1-1 game.
Saint Joseph's went back in front in the home half of the third, scoring four runs with two outs. Cuoci hit a two-run home run and the Hawks plated two more runs on back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 5-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, singles by Mason senior infielder
Alejandro Aponte, sophomore infielder
Daniel Brooks and Reckling loaded the bases. Driscoll then walked to force in Aponte from third to cut the Hawks advantage to 5-2.
Saint Joseph's had another big inning in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on two hits and five walks against Mason freshman relievers
Jared Lyons and
Stuart Barrett to extend the lead to 10-2.
In the seventh, Reckling led off with a double to left-center and scored Mason's final run of the day on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder
Bailey Klein.
Saint Joseph's loaded the bases in the seventh against Mason junior reliever
James Beasley and scored four runs on four hits in the inning for the 14-3 final score.
The Patriots have dropped eight of their last 10 games, while the Hawks have won eight of nine and are off to a 3-0 start in Atlantic 10 play for the first time since the 2009 season.
Marconi (1-3) allowed five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk over 4.0 innings and took the loss. Lyons gave up four runs on one hit and three walks in 0.1 inning, Barrett surrendered one run on two hits and two walks in 1.2 innings and Beasley was touched for four runs on four hits in 1.0 inning of work.
Zimmerman allowed two runs on four hits in 3.2 innings for the Hawks in a no-decision. Saint Joseph's junior Hayden Seig (1-2) tossed 2.1 hitless innings and earned his first win of the season.
Reckling went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Driscoll was 1-for-2 with two walks and drove in a run for the Patriots.
Saint Joseph's scored 14 runs on 14 hits and Mason scored three runs on nine hits in the game. Every player in the Saint Joseph's starting lineup had at least one hit for the second straight game. The Hawks scored 43 runs on 44 hits against the Patriots in the series.
The Patriots return home to face Towson on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
