FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team split a doubleheader with Saint Francis on Wednesday evening. The Patriots earned their fourth walk-off victory of the season with a 6-5 win in the second game of the day. After the Patriots loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, freshman
Taylor Dadig drew the walk-off walk, just four days after recording the walk-off sacrifice fly against East Carolina.
Mason will head into conference play with an 8-13 overall record. The Patriots travel to Dayton, Ohio for a road series against the Flyers on March 23-24.
It was a high-scoring affair in the first game of the doubleheader. The Patriots exploded offensively in the third inning, recording seven hits for seven runs to lead 7-1.
Adriana Erickson singled to left field to score
Liz Seymour in the bottom of the fourth, extending Mason's lead, 8-1.
Saint Francis finished the game scoring 11 unanswered runs to win game one, 12-8. Dadig went 3-for-4 while
Meghan Graham,
Jess Curbeira and Seymour tabbed two hits in the loss. Mason recorded season highs in runs (8), hits (12) and RBIs (8) but ultimately came up short against the Red Flash.
In game two of the doubleheader, sophomore
Kate Owsley made her first start of the season in the circle. She pitched 3.1 innings, giving up only one hit while earning her first career strikeout. All four runs scored during Owsley's time on the mound were unearned due to errors on Mason.
The Patriots came out swinging in the first inning.
Saige Cisler,
Madison Aker and Dadig notched singles while Aker, Dadig and
Amber Verstynen recorded RBIs to lead 3-0. Saint Francis responded with three unearned runs in the top of the third.
Seymour tripled down the right field line to start the bottom of the third inning. She later crossed home plate after a SFU error, giving Mason the 4-3 lead.
Mason's fourth error of the game allowed the Red Flash to tie the game 4 all in the fourth inning. Seymour, once again, stepped up with her bat for the Patriots. She blasted her first home run of the season over center field in the bottom of the fifth.
In a back-and-forth game, Saint Francis responded with a home run of its own to start the sixth inning. Mason came up to bat in the bottom of the seventh with the game tied 5-5.
Seymour reached first on a fielding error by SFU's first baseman. Aker then notched her second hit of the ballgame to give Mason a runner on second and third. Erickson came in to pinch hit and drew a critical walk to load the bases. Dadig, for the second time this season, walked it off for the Patriots drawing the game-winning RBI walk.
