FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team dropped a pair of contests on Saturday afternoon in the lone day of the Patriot Classic. Sunday's three games will not be played due to expected inclement weather.
The Patriots fell to Albany (7-2) and Colgate (5-2) to drop to 3-7 overall. Up next, Mason will host the Cherry Blossom Classic March 8-10 at the George Mason Softball Complex.
In Mason's opening game of the day, freshman
EJ Bankson lifted Mason's offense with a double down the line in the second inning, scoring senior
Liz Seymour. Later in the inning, freshman
Amber Verstynen singled to the shortstop for a RBI. Ultimately, the Patriots were unable to capitalize on a strong second inning. Albany responded with a two-run third inning and five-run fourth inning. Pitcher
Bekah Ansbro recorded the loss, dropping to 1-3 this season.
The Patriots battled the Colgate Raiders in their final game of the day.
Adriana Erickson hit a solo home run in the second inning to cut Colgate's lead to one, 2-1. After a three-run fifth inning extended Colgate's lead to 5-2, Mason threatened to close in on the Raiders. The Patriots' patience at the plate helped them load the bases in the bottom of the fourth. However, Mason could not capitalize on the opportunity. In the bottom of the seventh, three straight hits by Mason loaded the bases once again. Sophomore
Meghan Graham scored on a wild pitch; however, that would be the last run scored by Mason. Pitcher
Haellie Gordon (0-3) recorded the loss while freshman
Anna DiMari tabbed her first career hit with a single in the third.
