DAVIDSON, N.C. – The George Mason University men's tennis team held set leads in a number of singles matches when Sunday's contest wrapped up, but could not win the early matches, falling to Davidson 4-0 in North Carolina.
The Patriots were competitive in matches across the event. In doubles, Mason's No. 1 crew of
Pally Ray and
Ryan Charles nearly knocked off Davidson's tandem of Fries/Rose. The Patriots advanced the match to a tiebreak (7-6) but could not win in extra points, falling 7-3.
At No. 2 doubles, Mason's team also came close to grabbing the win. Juniors
Jakob Nielsen and
Edward Ayers battled but fell 6-4 against Davidson's Mazzoni/Macintosh duo.
In singles, Ayers was in position for victory at No. 1. He won his first set over Alex Fries, 6-4, and was tied in the second 3-3 before that contest was called.
At No. 4, sophomore
Ryan Charles captured his first set, 6-4, but fell in his second, 6-3. Charles was up 1-0 in the third when the match was called.
Graduate student
Giuliano Buzoianu also won his opening set, 7-5, but had his match called before he could take advantage of the opportunity.
The Patriots return to action Saturday at noon with a contest at George Washington. First serve between Mason and GW is set for noon.
