PHOENIX, Ariz. – In only the second five-set match of the season for the Patriots, No. 14 George Mason men's volleyball came up short on Friday night, falling to Grand Canyon 3-2. The Patriots drop to 12-6 overall while the Lopes improve to 11-11 for their fourth straight win against a ranked opponent.
"We went into tonight with a good game plan and energy," said head coach
Jay Hosack. "We let the fifth set get away from us with too many unforced errors. When you play good teams, we can't make that many mistakes. We will regroup for tomorrow's match."
Several Patriots recorded career highs in the five-set thriller, including a dominant performance by redshirt sophomore
Jack Reese. The middle blocker tabbed a career-high 12 blocks, destroying his previous career-best mark of nine.
Sam Greenslade (7) and
Justin Coleman (5) also set personal bests in blocks, helping Mason hold a 16.5 to 12.5 advantage in the category.
Offensively, Mason received strong contributions from many hitters, including a match-high 19 kills from opposite hitter
Hayden Wagner. Greenslade (10k),
Kyle Barnes (9k),
Langston Payne (8k) and Reese (8k) also provided solid performances in the loss.
Mason opened up the first set on a 7-1 scoring run to lead 11-5. Although Grand Canyon would threaten with runs of its own, a final three point run by the Patriots gave Mason the 21-17 advantage. The Green & Gold claimed the first set, 25-20, behind a .409 hitting percentage and seven blocks.
In the second set of play, Mason once again jumped out to an early lead, 7-4. Wagner notched a kill followed by two aces during the scoring run. Like the first set of play, GCU responded with a run of its own to take the lead, 15-13. It was a battle down the stretch of the set, but the Lopes ultimately tied the match 1-1 with a 25-23 second set win.
Mason came out strong offensively in the third set, hitting .357 with only four attacking errors. A late 4-0 scoring run allowed the Patriots to take control of the late stages of the set, winning the third game 25-22. Four kills by Greenslade helped Mason take the 2-1 lead in the match.
The Lopes were too hot to handle in the fourth and fifth sets. GCU's seven-point lead in the fourth set proved to be too much to overcome as the Patriots dropped the fourth game, 25-18. In the fifth and decisive set, Mason found itself down once again, 8-4. As the teams exchanged sides, Grand Canyon would go on to win the final set, 15-9, and the match.
