WASHINGTON –
Erin Donoghue needed just one game to triple her scoring total – and lead George Mason to another victory in the process.
The reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year scored a career-high six goals in a 13-10 victory at American on Wednesday at Jacobs Complex. The Patriots (2-2) won their second straight as Donoghue, who had just three goals through the first three games, also won six draw controls and caused three turnovers.
Freshman
Deanna Balsama also tied career highs with three goals and three assists as Mason wrapped up a stretch of four straight road games to start the season. Senior Chachi Kelegan, juniors
Julianna Brown and
Morgan Rynn and sophomore
Abby Folker each had a goal and an assist. Junior
Hailey Johnson also recorded an assist.
In a high-scoring game that featured four lead changes and six ties, the Patriots pulled away in the second half. American led 5-3 midway through the first half before Mason tied the game on two straight goals from Donoghue.
After the Eagles (1-3) twice jumped in front, Donoghue scored for fourth time in the half, this one off an assist from Johnson, to tie the game with 2:03 left in the half. The teams entered halftime knotted at 7-7 but Mason quickly took the lead for good.
Folker scored less than three minutes in on an unassisted goal for the start of five straight goals by the Patriots. Donoghue and Rynn followed suit with goals and then Brown notched both of her goals in succession, giving Mason a 12-7 lead with nearly 23 minutes remaining.
American didn't go away, pulling within 12-10 with 2:49 left. But Donoghue all but put the game away with her sixth and final goal with 84 seconds to go.
Junior
