RICHMOND, Va. – George Mason's two in-state products led the charge in guiding the Patriots to a key road victory.
Sophomore
Camarie Gatling and junior
Alexsis Grate combined for 25 points in front of a slew of family and friends in helping Mason to a 67-52 victory over Richmond on Thursday night at the Robins Center.
Gatling, playing in her hometown, filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, two blocked shots and two assists. Grate, a little bit more than an hour away from her home in Hampton, came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
In all, five players scored in double figures for the Patriots (14-12, 6-7 Atlantic 10), who has now won at least six road games in each of the last three seasons. Sophomore
Nicole Cardaño-Hillary scored 12 of her 16 points after halftime and grabbed eight rebounds while tying a career-high with seven assists in addition to three steals.
Junior captain
Jacy Bolton recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds along with four assists. Junior
Sarah Kaminski added 10 points, including a key 3-pointer late.
Richmond (7-19, 4-9) led for only a minute as the Patriots stayed in control for most of the game. They took a 33-24 lead into halftime on Cardano-Hillary's putback as time expired and extended the lead to 15 early in the third quarter.
But the Spiders put forth a comeback in the final period, pulling within eight, 60-52, with 3:29 to go on a 3-ptr by Claire Holt, who finished with a game-high 18 points. After a defensive stop, Mason made a big play to thwart the rally.
With the shot clock expiring, Cardano-Hillary dished off a pass to Kaminski on the right wing. From five feet behind the arc, Kaminski unleashed a high-arching shot that bounced off the front of the rim, hit the backboard and then rattled off the rim twice before rolling in. Cardano-Hillary followed with a trey on the very next possession as the Patriots quickly pushed the lead to 66-52 with 1:18 left.
Mason outrebounded the Spiders 44-30 and scored 15 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds. The Patriots also dominated points in the paint, 32-14.
Mason returns home to play Dayton at 2 p.m. on Sunday in EagleBank Arena for their Pink Game to raise awareness for breast cancer research. The Patriots will also honor their two seniors,
Jewel Triggs and
Casey Davis, before the game.
