FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team put clamps on during a pivotal second-quarter on Thursday night.
The Patriots held La Salle to just three points in the period en route to a 59-42 victory on Valentine's Day at EagleBank Arena. The 42 points were the lowest by a Mason opponent this season and fewest they've allowed since surrendering 42 to VCU last season.
Sophomore
Nicole Cardaño-Hillary scored a game-high 17 points and junior
Jacy Bolton recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds in addition to three assists and two steals.
Juniors

Sarah Kaminski and sophomore
Camarie Gatling each added eight points as Mason (13-11, 5-6 Atlantic 10) bounced back from a road loss to Fordham on Sunday. The Patriots have won three straight at home and are now 27-5 at EagleBank Arena over the last two seasons.

Nyla Milleson said. "Good bounceback win after a tough one over the weekend. I thought we came in really, really focused tonight. I thought our energy was really good. Defensively, I thought we were locked in."
Leading by just one after the first quarter, the Patriots used a 9-1 run to open the second period to pull away. They held the Explorers to just three points on 1-of-11 shooting from the field (11.1 percent) in the quarter. La Salle also committed 10 turnovers in the second quarter. Mason scored 25 points off turnovers, including 19 in the second quarter.
The Patriots set a season high with 13 steals, with Gatling leading the way with three and three others (Bolton, Cardaño-Hillary and Kaminski) with two. La Salle committed 26 turnovers, also a season-high for an opponent. The Explorers (4-22, 1-11) shot just 34.6 percent from the field. Thursday marked the first time the Patriots had won a game this season when failing to score 60 points or more.
Mason now gets a test when conference leader VCU (19-6, 11-1) comes to town for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Sunday at EagleBank Arena on Girl Scout Day. With five regular-season games (three at home) remaining, the Patriots are in a four-way tie for seventh at 5-6 in league play. The top eight teams host the first round of the A-10 Women's Basketball Championship on March 5.
