FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason men's volleyball program has received national letters of intent for the early signing period from five student-athletes; Colin Heath, Omar Hoyos, Jason Ashenfelter, Nikolas Colburn and Sam Peters, head coach
Jay Hosack announced this week.
Heath, a 6-foot-6 outside hitter, was a three-year letter winner at New Trier High School where he accumulated 336 kills, 312 digs, 40 blocks and 33 serving aces in a two-year span. The Winnetka, Ill. native was an All-Conference selection during his junior season (2018).
"Colin is a solid all-around player with strong ball control skills," Hosack said. "He is a proficient attacker and has a high volleyball IQ."
Hoyos, a 6-foot-6 outside hitter, earned a plethora of rewards during his time at Archbishop E. McCarthy High School. The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native recorded 356 kills (55.4 K%), 247 receptions, 155 digs, 56 serving aces and 50 blocks.
Those stats helped Hoyos earn the 2019 Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel Boy's Volleyball Player of the Year awards, 2019 Broward County Boy's Volleyball Player of the Year accolade and a 2019 VolleyballMag.com first team All-American selection.
"Omar is one of the top outside hitter prospects in the country and was recruited by all of the top programs," Hosack said. "He has a high volleyball IQ and attacks with heat and range, which will help us when he steps in the gym next year."
Ashenfelter is a 6-foot-5 middle blocker from Redondo Beach, Calif. He attended Redondo Union High School where he was a two-time letter winner for the Seahawks. Volleyball is in Ashenfelter's blood as his father, Mike, played division I volleyball at Southern California.
"Jason comes from a strong junior club and high school team, which provides some of the best coaching in the country for young men," Hosack stated. "He has a strong whip for an arm and continues to grow."
Colburn, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter, was a letter winner at Huntington Beach High School. He led his program in kills during his time with the Oilers. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native earned All-American, All-Tournament, All-County and All-Academic honors during his four years with Huntington Beach.
"Niko is a strong outside hitter and was highly touted by most college coaches during his recruitment. He has a strong arm and a solid passing platform. We look forward to watching him progress over his time here in Fairfax," Hosack said.
Peters, a 6-foot-8 middle blocker, was a two-time letter winner at Lyons Township High School where he recorded 144 blocks, 129 kills and 20 service aces during his junior campaign. Peters' blocks per season mark (144) is currently the best in school history at Lyons Township. The La Grange Park, Ill. native earned an All-Conference selection and an AVCA Team Academic Award.
"Sam is another strong recruit from the Midwest with a good arm swing and strong footwork," Hosack said. "He is coming in to strengthen our middle blocker group and is going to be a strong competitor for us in the future."
