NEWARK, Del. – Cold shooting doomed the George Mason women's basketball team as they fell to Delaware 63-44 on Sunday afternoon in Newark, Del. The Patriots move to 5-7 overall with one non-conference test remaining.
Mason shot a season-low 25.4 percent (15-59) from the floor and 22.7 percent (5-22) from behind the arc. The Patriots also committed a season-high 23 turnovers, including 16 in the first half of play. Delaware shot 44.4 percent (24-54) from the field but struggled from deep (1-11).
Senior
Jacy Bolton led the Patriots with 18 points and nine rebounds. She's now seven points away from 1,000 career points. Junior Nicole Cardaño-Hillary chipped in 12 points, including going 5-of-6 from the free throw line, and a season-high six steals.
Freshman
Vita Stam made her first career start for the Green & Gold, helping the Patriots jump out a 6-3 advantage. Delaware then notched a three-point field goal to take the lead with six minutes remaining (7-6). Out of the media timeout, the Blue Hens scored six straight points (13-6). Bolton scored Mason's final five points of the quarter to cut the deficit to eight (19-11).
Mason pulled within five with 6:13 to go in the second quarter after a three-pointer by Bolton (21-16). But, that would be as close as the Patriots would get as they trailed by 10 at the break (31-21).
At the half, Mason's offense was held to just 24.0 percent (6-25) from the floor and 18.2 percent (2-11) from behind the arc. The Patriots committed 16 turnovers, resulting in 14 points for Delaware. The Blue Hens outscored the Patriots 18-6 in the paint.
The Patriots were held without a field goal for the first three minutes of the third quarter as Delaware extended its advantage to 14 (37-23). Mason then pieced together a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to nine with 5:25 on the clock (37-28). But, the Blue Hens quickly responded with nine straight points to force a Mason timeout (46-28). After three quarters of play, Mason was down 49-33.
Delaware outscored Mason 14-11 in the fourth quarter to cruise to victory, 63-44.
Mason finishes non-conference play on New Year's Eve, Tuesday at SMU. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas.
