Mason Wraps Up Non-Conference Play At TCU Monday

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University men's basketball team (11-1) puts the finishing touches on non-conference play with a Monday night matchup at TCU.

Tip-off between the Patriots and Horned Frogs is set for 9 p.m. (ET). Monday's contest will be televised regionally on Fox Sports Southwest and will be carried within the DMV on MASN2. In addition, Bill Rohland will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 8:45 p.m. (ET).

PATRIOT POINTS
* Mason is 3-1 in games away from EagleBank Arena this season (0-1 on the road, 3-0 on netural courts).

* The Patriots are 11-1 for the first time since 1983-84 (that team started 12-1). Mason began the year 5-0 for the first time in school history, before falling at Maryland on Nov. 22.

* Mason's 11 regular season non-conference wins are a Division I school record. The Patriots had 10 victories in 2016-17 and 2010-11, and nine in 2011-12 and 2007-08. The 1983-84 team (Div. II) tallied 16 regular season non-conference wins.

* The 11th win came Dec. 21 vs. UMBC, when Mason held the Retrievers to 37.3 percent shooting en route to a 69-53 triumph in EagleBank Arena.

* The Patriots also held the Retrievers to just 21.1 percent from 3-point range. On the season, Mason is 12th nationally in 3pt FG defense (.266) and 60th in overall FG defense (.392).

* Jordan Miller led Mason with 17 points (7-11 FG), five rebounds and three steals vs. UMBC. Jamal Hartwell II added 14 points, while Javon Greene tallied 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in the win. Mason tallied a season-high 11 steals overall in the game.

* AJ Wilson added a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with five blocks and nine points. The Laurel, Md., product is third nationally in blocks per contest (3.8) and 10th in offensive rebounds/game (4.1).

* The Dec. 21 victory vs. UMBC marked the 800th win in Mason's 54 season history.

* The Patriots have compiled 11 wins despite leading at the half in just four of 12 contests on the year.

* Mason has won its first eight home games for the first time since 2010-11. That Patriot squad went a perfect 14-0 in Fairfax en route to an NCAA Tournament Round of 32 berth.

* Justin Kier, the 2019 A-10 Most Improved Player, missed his seventh game of the season vs. UMBC (ankle sprain). Kier sat out the first six games of 2019-20 with a stress fracture (right foot) but then played five straight games with the following minutes progression: 4, 9,16,18,26. He is day-to-day with the ankle sprain.

* The Patriots have held the rebounding edge in nine of 12 games this season and rank second in the A-10 in rebounding margin (+5.4).

* Mason is No. 73 in the NCAA NET metric as of Dec. 27. The Patriots also are ranked 21st in the Mid Major Top-25 compiled by MidMajorMadness.com.

Monday's game vs. TCU marks the first ever meeting between the Patriots and Horned Frogs in men's basketball.

HISTORY vs. BIG 12 OPPONENTS
Mason is 2-9 (.182) all time against Big 12 foes. Mason's most common opponent is West Virginia (0-4). The Patriots are 1-0 against Oklahoma State (71-68 win in 2015-16) and 1-1 vs. Kansas State (win was 87-77 over No. 18 KSU in 2007-08). Mason played a pair of Big 12 schools in 2018-19, including setbacks to NCAA Tournament teams Baylor (61-72) on Nov. 24 and Kansas State (58-59) on Dec. 29. In the game against the Wildcats, the Patriots rallied from a 21-point, second-half deficit to nearly pull off the upset in the Little Apple.

A LOOK AT THE HORNED FROGS (8-3, 0-0 BIG 12; NET No.  100, KenPom No. 67)
TCU was picked to finish 10th in the 2019-20 Big 12 preseason poll. The Horned Frogs are 8-3 to begin the year, with losses to Clemson (60-62, OT) and USC (78-80) by a combined four points. TCU ranks in the top-25 nationally in both assists per game (17.0) and turnover margin (+5.0). The Horned Frogs force a turnover on 25.8 percent of opponent possessions (8th nationally). Desmond Bane leads TCU in scoring (15.9 ppg) and grabs 7.1 rebounds/contest, while RJ Nemhard adds 12.4 points and 4.1 assists/game. Kevin Samuel ranks in the top-10 nationally in both field goal percentage (.686) and double-doubles (7). He averages 11.7 points and team highs in rebounds (8.6 rpg) and blocks (2.4 bpg).

Graduate student Jaire Grayer is at 8.8 points/game and 4.9 rebounds/game while shooting a team-best 52.3 percent (23-44) from 3-point range. The former Patriot played four years for George Mason before pursuing his graduate year in Fort Worth this season. The Flint, Mich., product scored 1,154 points in his Mason career and is fifth all time in 3-point field goals made (184).
