FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team will finish out 2019 portion of its schedule with three Mid-American Conference matches. The Patriots (5-1, 1-0 MAC) will travel to Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York to battle Edinboro, Cleveland State and Buffalo.
The opening match on Friday against Edinboro will be broadcast nationally on FloWrestling.com. Fans can follow the results of all three matches live on Trackwrestling.com.
MAT NOTES
- Mason and Edinboro come in with 5-1 records overall, with the Patriots 1-0 in MAC competition and the Fighting Scots 2-0. Mason owns a 19-18 win over Clarion, while Edinboro has defeated Kent State (29-6) and Ohio (25-7).
- Cleveland State (1-0) defeated Buffalo (0-1) in its only MAC dual this season, 19-17. Buffalo is 2-6 overall (0-2) in the MAC, dropping an 11-28 decision to No. 19 Missouri on Sunday.
- Mason is ranked tied for tenth with Ohio in the MAC Coaches December Rankings. Buffalo is ranked sixth, Edinboro is slotted ninth and Cleveland State (t-13).
- In individual MAC weight class rankings, all four schools have wrestlers ranked in the top six.
- Mason's Colston DiBlasi (12-7) is third at 149 lbs. Junior Neil Schuster (15-3) entered the poll third at 165 lbs.
- Cleveland State's freshman Logan Heil (125) ranks sixth and sophomore Ben Smith (197) fourth are new to the poll. Senior Evan Cheek (141) is fifth.
- Buffalo junior Derek Spann (133) and senior Troy Keller (165) are both ranked at the top of their weight classes. Sophomore San Schuyler (197) is ranked sixth.
- Edinboro's Jacob Oliver (174) is ranked second and comes in with a 10-3 record. Jon Spaulding (10-4) is third at heavyweight, while freshman Tye Varndell (9-5) is fifth at 133 lbs.
- Freshman Josh Jones will have a familiar opponent when he takes to the mat at 133 pounds with Edinboro's Tye Varndell. It will be a rematch of last year's PIAA Class AA championship bout at 132 lbs. Jones, wrestling for Saucon Valley High School, would claim a 7-3 decision over Varndell, who was wrestling for Cambridge Springs High School.
EDINBORO
Last Meeting: Jan. 27, 2019 – George Mason 20, Edinboro 19
The Patriots defeated Edinboro for the first time in program history, 20-19 last season. The Fighting Scots had won the first five meetings between the schools. Matt Voss, ranked 16th at heavyweight, swung the match in favor of George Mason with an 11-2 major decision over Jon Spaulding in the final match.
CLEVELAND STATE
Last Meeting: Jan. 10, 2019 – George Mason 26, Cleveland State 19
The Patriots won last year's match played at the Recreation Athletic Complex on campus. The all-time series with the Vikings is even at 3-3. The Vikings have won the last two matches at Cleveland State. Current Mason wreslters Neil Schuster,
Colston DiBlasi and
Kolby Ho all won their matches against the Vikings last season.
BUFFALO
Last Meeting: Jan. 10, 2019 – George Mason 26, Cleveland State 19
Mason's wrestling team fell to Buffalo, 26-7, with four of the matches decided in overtime at the George Mason Field House last season. Current Patriot
Colston DiBlasi earned a decision over Noah Grover, 12-6 at 165 pounds.
