The George Mason Patriots started off the season with an overtime thriller win over Navy Midshipmen 68-55 on Tuesday night. The Patriots were calm and poised as they stepped out for their opening game, capitalizing on the small and key moments, bringing them to a rewarding victory.

On Armed Forces Night, the student section was decked out in their Green & Gold with their USA George Mason hats cheering on Patriots. The Green Machine welcomed everyone back to Mason basketball with their festive mood.

In his opening night debut, freshman Xavier Johnson was the key to victory, leading the Patriots to a 16-point extra period and propelling the Patriots to the overtime win. His 15-point effort was the most by a Patriot in his opening debut in 15 years. He also tallied three rebounds and three assists.

One of the fastest point guards in the nation, sophomore Jamal Hartwell II also played a big role in bringing the Patriots back in the game near the end of regulation. Hartwell led the team in 3-point shots made with four, including one to tie up the game at 52-52 with under 30 seconds left remaining in regulation.

Coach Dave Paulsen noted that there was an importance of resilience in establishing the young team's identity, as the entire team had to step up to the court and kept their composure in the absence of senior Justin Kier. He also noted that the team showed leadership and poise in the critical moments in the game.

Mason got Navy out of their comfort zone, with Navy not being a high octane offensive team and featuring a plodding tempo. The Patriots were able to speed up the tempo of the game in spurts, making it a fast-paced contest and making Navy play their game style.

The Patriots return to action Friday vs. Longwood inside EagleBank Arena.
