Mason Hosts Pac-12 Oregon State in Home Opener

Fairfax, Va.— The George Mason wrestling team will begin its home slate Thursday with a match against the Pac-12 Oregon State Beavers at the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC) at 7 p.m.

The Patriots (1-0, 1-0 MAC) won its opening season match with a 19-18 win at conference foe Clarion on Sunday. A solid win for Mason, the Golden Eagles were ranked fifth in the preseason MAC coaches' poll, while the Patriots were sitting at 13th in the 15-team conference.
 
Oregon State (1-0) is coming off a 40-8 victory against Simon Fraser in Washington. Five wrestlers won by technical fall for the Beavers.
 
The match will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+.
 
MAT FACTS

*Mason is facing Oregon State for the second time in program history. The Patriots fell to No. 22 Oregon State, 32-9, in the 2017 home opener, Nov. 16, 2017.
 
*NCAA Qualifiers in the line-up include the Patriots Colston DiBlasi and Alex Madrigal and the Beavers Devan Turner, Hunter Willits and Grant Willits. 
 
*Both teams will also be competing in the Navy Classic on Saturday in Annapolis, Md.
 
HONORARY COACH
Former Mason wrestling head coach Jerry Mullins will be an honorary coach on the Mason bench. Mullins led Mason to an undefeated (15-0) season in 1973-74 and was named Virginia Collegiate Athletic Association (VCAA) Coach of the Year. The team finished first in the VCAA, boasting five individual champs. Four wrestlers qualified for NAIA Nationals, with John Long finishing in the top eight in the country. 
 
UP NEXT
The Patriots will travel to Annapolis for the 2019 Navy Classic on Saturday to compete in a field of 17 teams across the country.
