FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team dropped its home opener to Virginia Tech, 77-58, on Sunday afternoon at EagleBank Arena. The Patriots move to 1-1 overall while the Hokies improve to 2-0 in non-conference play.
Senior
Jacy Bolton led the Patriots with a team-high 15 points and five rebounds. Fellow senior
Alexsis Grate finished 4-of-5 from the field, including two three pointers, to notch 12 points to go along with three assists.
A pair of freshmen earned valuable experience against a tough ACC team. Forward
Tamia Lawhorne scored eight points while center
Jazmyn Doster grabbed five boards and a basket in her collegiate debut.
Virginia Tech limited the Patriots to just 20.0 percent shooting (3-15) in the first quarter to build a big early lead, 18-7. Mason responded in the second quarter with an 11-2 run to cut Tech's advantage to four, 22-18. The Patriots outscored the Hokies in the period; but, Virginia Tech built the lead back out to 10 at the break.
The Hokies shot 53.8 from the floor to take their largest lead of the game, 58-38, with 25 seconds remaining in the third period. Mason was held to just 21.4 percent (3-14) from the field in the quarter.
The Patriots shot a quarter-high 53.3 percent (8-15) in the final period of play. But it was too late as the Hokies maintained their lead to take the contest, 77-58.
Mason remains at home for a Saturday contest against Detroit Mercy at EagleBank Arena. Tip-off between the Titans and Patriots is scheduled for noon. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+.
