Patriots Clash With First-Place Billikens on Wednesday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team is back on the road for a mid-week matchup against the first-place Billikens on Wednesday.  The opening kick is scheduled for 8 p.m. eastern time at Hermann Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.
 
Last time out, Mason (3-7-1) remained unbeaten in conference play with a 3-2 double overtime victory against Dayton on Saturday night at George Mason Stadium.
 
With Mason trailing by two goals in the second half, senior defender Pablo Pertusa Martinez scored his first goal of the season in the 64th minute and senior forward Tunde Akinlosotu netted the equalizer in the 78th minute.
 
In double overtime, senior forward Raheem Lawal netted his first career game-winning goal in the 107th minute, scoring on a rebound off the post, to complete the Patriots' comeback.
 
Mason sophomore goalkeeper Brison Moorhead made five saves to earn his second win of the season.
 
The Patriots are currently tied for second place in the A-10 with six points.  Saint Louis and VCU are tied for atop the league standings with identical 3-0 records and nine points.
 
Mingachos leads the team in goals (4) and is tied for first on the club in points (10) while he ranks second in assists (2).  Among league leaders, Mingachos is second in shots (40), tied for fourth in goals and tied for sixth in points.   
 
Akinlosotu paces the Patriots in assists (4), second on the squad in goals (3) and tied for first in points (10).  He is tied for second in the league in game-winners, fourth in the league in assists and is tied for sixth in points.  Akinlosotu has scored all three of his goals at George Mason Stadium.
 
Moorhead (2-2-1, 2-0-0 A-10) has started five games and boasts a 1.64 goals against average.  He has made 22 saves and allowed nine goals on the season.
 
The Patriots have a record of 4-2-1 in the all-time series against the Billikens, including a 0-2-0 mark in Saint Louis.  Six of the seven meetings between the Patriots and Billikens have been decided by one goal or less. 
 
Mason defeated Saint Louis, 1-0, in double overtime in the Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinals last season on Nov. 4, 2018 at George Mason Stadium. 
 
Pertusa scored the game-winner on a header with less than three minutes remaining in the match to propel the Patriots to the A-10 semifinals.
 
SCOUTING SAINT LOUIS
 
The Billikens have an overall record of 6-3-0, including a mark of 3-0-0 against Atlantic 10 opponents.  Saint Louis is 2-1-0 at home and 4-2-0 on the road this season.
 
Last time out, the Billikens won their third straight match with a 2-0 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday in Amherst, Mass. 
 
Senior midfielder David Viox scored the eventual game-winner in the 39th minute, while sophomore forward Simon Becher added an insurance goal in the 70th minute of play and also picked up an assist.  Senior forward Leo Novaes assisted on both goals for the Billikens. 
 
The Billiken defense held the Minutemen without a shot on goal in the match to help freshman goalkeeper Patrick Schulte record his third shutout in league play.
 
Saint Louis has yet to surrender a goal in A-10 play.  The Billikens won 1-0 at Davidson (Sept. 21), 1-0 against Rhode Island (Sept. 28) and 2-0 at UMass (Oct. 5).
 
Novaes leads the team in goals (4) assists (5) and points (13).  He is tied for third in the league in assists and points.  Senior midfielder Devin Boyce is second on the club in goals (3), assists (3) and points (9).
 
The Billikens have had 10 different players score at least one goal, while 14 players have notched at least one point through the first nine matches of the season.
 
In goal, Schulte (6-2-0, 3-0-0 A-10) has started nine games with a 1.09 goals against average.  He has made 20 saves and allowed nine goals.
 
CORNER KICK
 
The Patriots have a record of 4-2-1 in the all-time series against the Billikens, including a 0-2-0 mark in Saint Louis.  Six of the seven meetings between the Patriots and Billikens have been decided by one goal or less. 
 
GLIMPSE AT THE PATRIOTS
 
The Patriots return 20 letterwinners and five of their top-six scorers from last year's team that advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship game.
 
Seniors Tunde Akinlosotu and Grant Robinson tied for the team lead in goals (5) during the 2018 season, while Akinlosotu's 15 points led the club.  Senior Ryan Mingachos tied for second on the team in goals (4), assists (4) and points (12).
 
The Patriots finished the 2018 campaign with a 9-8-0 overall record and posted a 5-3-0 mark against A-10 opponents, tying for third place in the conference during the regular season.  Mason was 6-3-0 at home, 2-4-0 on the road and 1-1 in games played at a neutral site.
 
In the A-10 quarterfinals, the Patriots defeated Saint Louis in double-overtime, 1-0.  In the semifinals at the Billiken Sports Center, Mason defeated Dayton, 1-0, in double-overtime to advance to the championship game for the first time since the 2013 season.
