Patriots Stumble on Road Against St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, N.Y. – The George Mason men's soccer team dropped its match at St. Bonaventure, 3-1, on Saturday evening at the Marra Athletics Complex in Olean, N.Y.

With the game scoreless, St. Bonaventure (4-9-0, 1-5-0 A-10) took the lead over Mason (4-9-1, 3-2-0 A-10) late in the first half.

St. Bonaventure sophomore midfielder Cuneyt Vardar scored his second goal of the season in the 36th minute to put the Bonnies in front 1-0.  Junior midfielder Francesco Caorsi and freshman defender John Engerman picked up the assists on the play.  

With the Patriots trailing by a goal in the second half, Mason senior defender Pablo Pertusa Martinez netted the equalizer in the 59th minute.  Freshman midfielder Leon Reilhac assisted on Pertusa's second goal of the season.

The Bonnies took control of the match with two goals in a span of two minutes.

Caorsi scored his second goal of the season in the 71st minute and junior midfielder Fredrik Hansen tallied his third goal of the year in the 73rd minute to make it a 3-1 game.

Mason sophomore goalkeeper Brison Moorhead made four saves, while St. Bonaventure junior goalkeeper Trevor Wilson made five saves in the match.

HOW THEY SCORED

36' | Vardar scored off a cross from the left side to give the Bonnies the lead.

59' | Pertusa converted on a pass inside the box from Reilhac to tie the match.

71' | Caorsi took a pass from freshman forward Joshua Pulla and scored the eventual game-winner.

73' | Hansen tallied off a touch pass into the box.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Patriots outshot the Bonnies 11-8, while St. Bonaventure had a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.  Mason had six corner kicks and St. Bonaventure had four corner kicks in the match.

Mason senior midfielders Ryan Mingachos and Daniel Damiani each recorded two shots on goal in the game.

UP NEXT

The Patriots are back in action against La Salle on Wednesday, Oct. 23 with the opening kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
