No. 14 Mason Returns to RAC for Friday Showdown Against Charleston

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team will play one lone match this weekend against the University of Charleston (W.Va.) on Friday. The Patriots welcome the Golden Eagles to the Recreation Athletic Complex for first serve scheduled at 7 p.m.
 
The Patriots are off to their best start since 2011 for an overall record of 5-1. Mason's most recent victory came over the Golden Eagles of Charleston (Jan. 19) in Charleston, W.Va. to start EIVA play 1-0.
 
NO. 14 IN THE NATION
For the first time this season, George Mason men's volleyball tabbed No. 14 in the AVCA DI-DII Coaches Poll, announced by the AVCA on Monday. This is the Patriots' first ranking since Feb. 13, 2017. 
 
HAYDEN HONORED
For the second-consecutive week, junior Hayden Wagner was named EIVA Offensive Player of the Week. The opposite hitter averaged 5.13 points per set and 4.50 kills per set on a .444 clip over two matches. He also hit a career-high .600 in Mason's EIVA opener against Charleston. 

LEADING THE NCAA
Several Patriots rank in the top five of a handful of NCAA statistical categories. Wagner ranks fifth in the country in kills per set (4.50) and fourth in points per set (5.41). Redshirt senior Langston Payne's eight blocks are tied for the second most this season in a four-set match. Junior Sam Greenslade continues to rank high in aces per set, sitting in fourth with 0.773. Greenslade's six aces in a four-set match continues to lead the nation. Lastly, the Patriots' .411 hitting percentage against Charleston ranks first in the nation in a four-set match. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
Mason defeated Ohio State, who at the time was ranked No. 11 in the country, in four sets on Jan. 18 in Columbus, Ohio. Mason hit .309 in the match compared to OSU's .257 clip. In their EIVA opener, the Patriots took down Charleston in four sets, hitting a season-high .411 in the match. 
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
University of Charleston (W.Va.): 2-3, 0-1 EIVA
The Golden Eagles finished seventh in the EIVA Preseason Coaches' Poll with 17 points. Sophomore outside hitter Max Senica and senior outside hitter Brandon Greenway were named Charleston's EIVA Preseason Players to Watch. 
 
Against Mason on Jan. 19, Greenway had 12 kills and hit .450, and Max Senica added 10 kills on .471 hitting. In addition, Adriel Roberts was named EIVA Defensive Player of the Week after posting 20 kills, 15 blocks and four digs over three matches. 

Mason holds an 8-0 all-time record against the Golden Eagles, dating back to 2015.
