FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason University men's basketball junior guard
Justin Kier has been named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
It marks the first time in his career the Grottoes, Va., product has garnered the weekly accolade. He shares player of the week honors with Dayton's Jordan Davis.
Kier averaged 22.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and shot 63.6 percent from the floor in two games for Mason against some of the league's premier competition.
On Sunday in the Patriots' 84-67 victory at Rhode Island, Kier poured in a game-high 19 points on just 10 shots (8-10 FG) while grabbing 10 rebounds to post his sixth double-double in the past seven games. He posted 13 of his 19 points in the second half, including a key bucket that stopped a 6-0 run which had moved URI within seven points late in the game (quieting the boisterous crowd in the process).
On Wednesday in the Patriots' close defeat to Davidson, Kier tallied a game-high 26 points (6-12 FG) and made a career-high 13 free throws on 14 attempts. Kier accounted for nearly half of Mason's point total and gave the Patriots a chance to win the game with his aggressive driving to the basket and perimeter defense (Mason held the Wildcats to 36 percent for the game). Kier also dished out four assists and posted three steals against Davidson.
The 6-foot-4-inch Kier has posted a double-double in six of the past seven games. He has posted 14+ points in 10 straight games, during which Mason has registered a 7-3 record. Kier is a critical reason why Mason is off to its best start (3-1) in its six years in the Atlantic 10.
Kier's player of the week accolade is the second for Mason this season. Senior
Otis Livingston II also earned the honor on December 3.
