FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team dropped its first match of the season to No. 3 UC Irvine on Saturday night. The Patriots claimed the third set, but ultimately fell in four to the Anteaters.
Mason drops to 3-1 on the season while UCI remains unbeaten with a record of 5-0. The Patriots will hit the road to take on another ranked opponent next weekend in #7 Ohio State on Jan. 18, followed by a match at University of Charleston (W. Va.) on Jan. 19.
"Hats off to Irvine, they're No. 3 in the country for a reason," said head coach
Jay Hosack. "We know we can compete at that level, we just have to have a higher level of execution. I like the future, it's very bright. We just have to compete harder and let the chips fall where they may."
In the opening set of play, Mason and UC Irvine exchanged points for the majority of the set. The first game saw 15 ties and seven lead changes. After back-to-back points by the 'Eaters, UCI took the lead, 21-19 and never looked back. Mason would drop the opening set 25-21.
