FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team dropped its first match of the season to No. 3 UC Irvine on Saturday night. The Patriots claimed the third set, but ultimately fell in four to the Anteaters.

Mason drops to 3-1 on the season while UCI remains unbeaten with a record of 5-0. The Patriots will hit the road to take on another ranked opponent next weekend in #7 Ohio State on Jan. 18, followed by a match at University of Charleston (W. Va.) on Jan. 19.

"Hats off to Irvine, they're No. 3 in the country for a reason," said head coach Jay Hosack. "We know we can compete at that level, we just have to have a higher level of execution. I like the future, it's very bright. We just have to compete harder and let the chips fall where they may."

In the opening set of play, Mason and UC Irvine exchanged points for the majority of the set. The first game saw 15 ties and seven lead changes. After back-to-back points by the 'Eaters, UCI took the lead, 21-19 and never looked back. Mason would drop the opening set 25-21.

In the second set of play, short runs by the 'Eaters helped them win the second set 25-19. A four-point scoring run followed by a three-point run pushed UCI's lead to five, 23-18.

Mason came out with vengeance in the third set, winning the set 25-23. A block by Reese and Barnes not only tied up the set 18 all, but led to a change of momentum in favor of the Patriots. Later, back-to-back kills by Langston Payne and Wagner pushed Mason's lead to two, 22-20. Wagner's 19th kill of the match would ultimately give the Patriots the set win.

UC Irvine came out hot to start the fourth and final set, claiming a 13-6 lead. The 'Eaters would lead for the remainder of the set to win, 25-16.
