Patriots Drop Both Saturday Matches in Jefferson Cup

George Mason went 0-2 on the final day of competition at the Jefferson Cup; falling to Youngstown State and UVA.
George Mason won the second set against Youngstown State by a score of 25-21. During the morning match, ShaLi Niu collected a career-high 11 kills.
In the final game of the Jefferson Cup, the Patriots took the second set by a score 26-24 over UVA.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – George Mason University women's volleyball team dropped both Saturday matches on the final day of the Jefferson Cup. Mason fell to Youngstown State 3-1 (26-28, 25-21, 16-25, 16-25) to begin the day of competition. In the final match of the event, Mason battled hard but ultimately fell to UVA, 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 19-25, 21-25).

Mason and Youngstown State exchanged points throughout the opening set to keep the match close. A three-point run by the Patriots tied up the set 24-24; but ultimately, YSU took the first set, 28-26.
Kills by Peyton Ehmke and Emily Konchan extended the Patriots lead to 20-15 in the second set. Mason never looked back – winning 25-21.
Youngstown State jumped out to early leads in the third and fourth sets, proving to be too much for Mason. The Penguins took the final two sets both by scores of 25-16.
ShaLi Niu notched a career-high 11 kills while Emily Konchan supported the offensive attack with 37 assists.

With the second set all tied up at 24, a key kill by Peyton Ehmke gave Mason the late-set advantage, which ultimately gave the Patriots the set win, 26-24.
Peyton Ehmke stepped up for the Patriots in her role as middle blocker with 11 kills.
A three-point run by Mason in the fourth set cut UVA's lead to one, 20-19. The Cavaliers responded by going on a 4-1 run to close out the set – winning 25-21.
The Cavaliers finished the match with a hitting percentage of .360 compared to the Patriots' .137.
UVA registered 12 blocks while Mason only recorded two blocks on the match.

UP NEXT

The Patriots will host the Mason Invitational on Sept. 14-15 at the RAC. Mason will face Northern Colorado on Friday at 7 p.m. and Norfolk State (noon) and Radford (5 p.m.) on Saturday.
