FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University women's volleyball team will participate in the Jefferson Cup this weekend hosted by University of Virginia. The Patriots will take on UNC Wilmington on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Youngstown State (11 a.m.) and UVA (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
After starting the season 0-2, the Patriots have gone 2-2 in their last four matches, collecting wins against Penn and Norfolk State. Mason dropped its last match to Navy on Tuesday night in three sets.
This weekend will be Mason's final non-conference road test before coming home for an eight-game homestand, including the Mason Invitational on Sept. 14-15 and the start of Atlantic 10 play.
NEW AND NOTES
- Last weekend the Patriots participated in the Georgetown Classic where libero Catie Espinoza and Peyton Ehmke were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances.
- Mason has received help from all parts of its offensive attack as seven different players have double-digit kills, including three players with more than 30 kills - Siron Hardy (49), Peyton Ehmke (44), and Bailey Williams (34).
- Mason had its highest hitting percentage of .391 this season against Norfolk State.
- Emily Konchan has collected 165 assists thus far for 8.25 assists per set – good for third in the Atlantic 10.
- Bailey Williams has recorded seven service aces for .39 service aces per set – good for fourth in the Atlantic 10.
THE OPPONENTS
UNC Wilmington: 4-3 Record (0-0 CAA)
After starting the season with three consecutive losses, UNC Wilmington responded by taking all three matches in the Georgetown Classic. Although both Mason and UNC Wilmington participated in the Georgetown Classic, the two teams never saw action against each other.
Between the two schools, Mason leads the all-times series 37-11. UNC Wilmington won the last matchup, 3-2, on Oct. 26, 2012.
Youngstown State: 5-2 Record (0-0 Horizon)
Youngstown State started the season on a three-game winning streak, collecting wins in all matches during the Bucknell Invitational. Other notable wins include a 3-0 victory over Atlantic 10 opponent Duquesne last Saturday. The Patriots will meet the Penguins for the first time in program history.
Virginia: 2-4 Record (0-0 ACC)
Virginia opened the 2018 season on a four-game losing streak; falling to Ole Miss, Oregon State, Iowa State, and Nevada. The Cavaliers are currently riding a two-game winning streak after winning the final two matches in the Northern Illinois Invitational last weekend.
The Cavaliers lead the all-time series record 19-8. The last matchup between the two came during 2010 when UVA defeated Mason 3-0 at Charlottesville, Va.
