FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University women's volleyball downed rival George Washington 3-1 on Friday night. The Patriots are off to its best start in conference play since joining the A-10 in 2013. This win marks the first time since 2007 that Mason has defeated George Washington.
"Tonight was a great victory for the program," said coach
Aylene Ilkson. "Our serving and passing really put us in a position to run our offense. Along with our blocking and defense, I was really proud of how we competed."
George Washington claimed the first set 25-20. Although Mason struggled offensively in the set, Espinoza was able to steady the defense with eight of her 18 digs.
After the first set, it was all Mason. The Patriots took the second set 25-19 behind Williams' seven kills and Konchan guiding the offense with 11 assists.
In the third set, Mason's six service aces helped lift the Patriots over the Colonials – winning the set, 25-16.
In the final set, a five-point run by the Patriots opened their lead to 13-6. Mason never looked back for the rest of the set – winning 25-10.
