FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason Softball team (16-24, 6-8 A-10) will head to Philadelphia for an A-10 series this weekend with the eighth-place La Salle explorers. The matchups include a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. and one noon hour game on Sunday to conclude the series.
The Patriots took two of three from the Explorers last season at the George Mason Softball Complex.
Marina Vitalich threw a complete game shutout in both closely-contested Mason victories. In the Sunday victory, the Patriots got an RBI single from
Jess Middleton and an RBI double from
Katherine Marsh to extend the lead to 3-0 and 4-0. Marsh also had a sacrifice-fly RBI to make her responsible for two of the four Patriots runs scored.
The split with George Washington on Wednesday kept the Patriots on pace for the six-seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament – one game behind George Washington and two games ahead of Rhode Island. In the victory on Wednesday, junior
Jess Curbeira provided all the Patriots' runs on one swing of the bat with her first career grand slam. Mason also got 6.1 strong innings from sophomore
Bekah Ansbro, who dropped her ERA to 3.30. In her last 19.2 innings pitched, Ansbro has a 1.07 ERA and has struck out 20 batters. She's been the winning pitcher in four of those five appearances.
Freshman
Haellie Gordon entered the seventh inning of game two and closed the door for her second save of the season. The shutdown inning tied her with Ansbro for the most on the team. Gordon also made the start in game two and struck out seven over the course of her appearance.
RS-freshman
Adriana Erickson collected two hits and an RBI in game two against the Colonials. She is now fourth on the team in hits (29), T-fourth in RBI (15) and third in batting average (.302).
Sophomore
Madison Aker led the Patriots with three hits at the top of the lineup on Wednesday. Between the final SBU game and the first GW game, Aker went 7-for-9 with three RBI and a stolen base. The showings were her sixth and seventh multi-hit games of the season to put her fifth on the team in that department.
