FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason wrapped up its three-game slate with one game on Saturday afternoon against the Saint Louis Billikens. The Mason starting nine saw two-hit performances from
Jess Curbeira and
Adriana Erickson, but Saint Louis won the game 12-2.
Erickson began her stellar day at the plate with a first-inning double to left field in her first at-bat of the game. The extra-base hit was her sixth of the year and extended her hitting streak to seven games – a span where she's hitting .435 with an OPS of 1.326. Mason had two runners on base but couldn't score in the opening frame.
"There's no one thing [to the loss], sometimes you just get beat. That's a good ball club and they played well," head coach
Joe Verbanic said. "We just need to keep plugging away and getting better. I'm not a big push the panic button person because I know that you honor the fundamentals, keep working on the fundamentals of the game and continue to work to get better. Eventually it will fall into place if you [put in the work]."
Saint Louis scored three runs in the first, three in the second and one in the third to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Mason drove Curbeira home in the bottom half of the third when Erickson singled to left field, cementing her fifth two-hit game of the season. Saint Louis led 7-1 after three full until a five-run fourth inning pushed the score to 12-1.
Curbeira joined Erickson as the Patriots players with two hits in the fifth inning by clubbing a leadoff double to right field. Two batters later,
Alyssa Lawton drove Curbeira home for her first RBI of the season that cut the Billikens lead to 12-2. However, the fifth inning production wasn't enough as Saint Louis kept its lead to win the game in five innings.
